OK, we're finalizing our cross country trip and are still looking for places to see on the way home through Colorado. I would appreciate any input on Glenwood Springs, what there is to do there and are there any good campgrounds nearby. Thanks

We went last summer on our return trip from Yellowstone and Rushmore. I was not impressed with the RV spots in the area and I had been there before for a wedding and stayed at the Lodge. So we parked the rigs (5 at that time) in the lower lot at the Lodge and stayed in the hotel for two nights. We got free breakfast and passes into the hot springs. If it works in your trip to get a hotel night in, I'd recommend it. A thread on here suggested a place not too far out of town I wanna say it was a state park. But the stuff right around there is not that great. Drove thru when we were there. I'd lodge it again if I were going.

Glenwood Springs is famous for the huge naturally heated swimming pool. Our sons loved it and now we are taking their kids. There are several cgs in the area. We stayed in one on the west edge of town (near Storm King Mtn I think). It was very basic, but reasonable, and it could handle a big rig in some sites. It is a beautiful drive down to Aspen, which has activities going on all year round.

dmatt,
Our son lived in Glenwood Springs until recently(he managed the Blockbuster video store), in August last year we visited him and stayed at very nice campground just East of Glenwood, just off I-70 exit 119 (no name). The C/G is Glenwood Canyon Resort, the Colorado River goes around the C/G, white water rafting etc. They have RV sites(full hookups), tent sites, cabins. there web site- www.glenwoodcanyonresort.com, phone-800-970-6737 you need to make reservations, open year round.
A great place to stay you can PM me if you want more info

The CG at No Name is probably the best in the immediate vicinity. Ami's Acres is at the West Glenwood exit but is kept fairly full with seasonal users. It also has more traffic noise than Glenwood Canyon Resort, although you will still hear trucks on I-70 from the upper parts of that CG.

There's also a few NF CG's down toward Aspen or Redstone. If you don't need hookups, Difficult CG is reasonably close to Aspen with decent privacy. Some sites are stream side. Redstone CG does have sites with electrical hookups and hot showers. It's located SW of Carbondale. Further along CO 133 is Bogan Flat CG, a typical NFS CG. If you're down this direction, you can head up toward Marble and Crystal. Some gorgeous scenery there.

Back toward Aspen, there's Maroon Bells, probably the most gorgeous place to visit locally. It is very popular but they have a bus system in place that has really helped eliminate some of the traffic congestion. In late June/early July the flowers are just gorgeous there.

From Maroon Lake (which is right where the bus drops you off) you can hike up to Crater Lake, a couple of miles up. The later in the year you're there, the higher you have to go to see the wildflowers. In late July/early August, the most amazing wildflower display in the state is just below Buckskin Pass above Crater Lake. A couple of hour hike to reach it, but oh my. . .

Of course there's the Hot Springs Pool to visit, and a touristy Glenwood Caverns nearby. You can rent bikes from a shop by the Hotel Colorado and ride up the bike path through Glenwood Canyon. Yes, you're in the canyon with the interstate, but you're generally below the grade and closer to the river. If you want another hike, head east on I-70 to the Hanging Lake exit and hike up to Hanging Lake. I do mean up -- you gain a lot of elevation, but it's an amazingly beautiful lake with trout visible in it (no fishing).

If you go there, don't miss the side trail to Spouting Rock.

We stayed there when it was called Truck at Rock Gardens Camp Ground. See pics of the CG and area.

To quote a famous line from the Blues Brothers movie,... "they come by so often you won't even notice them...". I liked it.
