Anyone have a Sport Chassis with the Mercedes Benz engine? Any
problems? Is it able to handle the long steep grades with a
heavy fifthwheel? Can it be ordered with a Jake?

Isn't the Sport Chassis a Freightliner? I have read that the Mercedes in a Freightliner pulls good but I don't have any personal experience.

He is talking about the MB engines in a MDT truck. The best place to talk to folks that have them would be on the Escapees then go to the MDT forum and ask your question there.

I believe that the MB engines in the MDT are proving themselves. I'm not sure if you can get a Jake but you can get and exhaust brake on them for sure.

A friend of mine has an M2 112 Sport Chassis with the Mercedes Benz 4000 engine. That engine is rated at 450 HP and 1550 ft-lb of torque. It will tow any fifth with ease.

My truck is not a Sport Chassis. Sport Chassis redoes the interior of the Freightliner and puts on their own bed. My truck is just a plain Freightliner and I built my bed. My cost was about half that of a Sport Chassis. I have an M2 106 with the Mercedes Benz 926 engine. It is rated at 330 HP and 1,000 ft-lbs of torque. I gross 36,000 lbs. I have been over Wolf Creek Pass, Monarch Pass and other steep grades several times in the last two years. I have had no problems with any of the steep grades.

Link to the engines.

Yes you can get an engine brake. In fact you can get both an engine brake and an exhaust brake with the Mercedes Benz.
I only got the 3 position exhaust brake on mine. ( Off, Low, High) It works great with the Allison automatic. I have yet to go down any long grade that the exhaust brake could not control my speed. I guess if you are really pulling heavy you could get both.

we bought a Sportchassis with Mercedes diesel on July 31, 2007 ... ours is the 330 hp/1000 ft/lbs of torque model ... to date, have towed just over 15,000 miles and am absolutely delighted with it .... only problem to day was a leak in the compressed air system which took a while to find ... prior to the purchase of this truck we towed with an '02 Chevy 3500 Duramax/Allison ... that was an excellent truck that served us well for over 150,000 miles taking us from ocean to ocean and border to border .... as happy as we were with the Chevy, it can't hold a candle to the Sportchassis ... in the area of ride, the air suspension, air cab, air seats makes driving on rough sections of interstate roads a pleasure ... longest tow to date has been a single day trip hauling a heavy travel trailer from central NC to south of Jacksonville, Florida and back ... because of the impact on our bodies, we simply could not do that with our Chevy .... this summer we will be leaving in late May from NC and plan to go all the way to the Oregon coast and we are really looking forward to the trip ... mileage wise, pulling the same heavy 5er, our Chevy could be counted on to get 10 - 10.5 mpg while towing and 16 running solo ... our Sportchassis isn't completely broken in and is already getting 11 towing and 12 solo ... if I can provide any additional info, just let me know ... I completely agree with the positive comments about the way the engine brake and the truck's Allison tranny work together ... we literally had her going down 11% grades with exceptional control
