Yes I am extremely excited today. After much to do, Apple has announced all the details and release dates for the iPhone SDK (software development kit) and the next firmware update (2.0). Why does this matter? With an officially supported SDK your favorite software company can release an iPhone version of their software. Independent companies can improve on the iPhone and innovate new features.

Along with the SDK, firmware 2.0 update makes some fantastic changes to Mail as well as adding Microsoft Exchange and ActiveSync support so that enterprise customers can harness the full capabilities of the iPhone.

I'm not providing a link because this is still breaking news and the full news articles will probably come out tonight or tomorrow. Might add a link at that time.

You can call me a fanboy - today I do not care!

On a side note, anyone out there interested in developing an iPhone version of TL directory software?

Released for developers, it will still be June at the earliest before its released to consumers and probably a bit longer for anything decent to be worth downloading.

It will be nice though.

Same Old Control-Freak Apple - They'll be "Gatekeeper" for third-party iPhone apps -
Control-Freak Apple

Apple plans to require that all mobile applications be distributed through its iTunes Store.
“Our sources confirm that Apple will act as a gatekeeper for applications, deciding which are and are not worthy of release, and publishing only approved applications to the iTunes Store; a process that will less resemble the iTunes Store’s massive directory of podcasts than its sale of a limited variety of iPod Games,”

And you thought MS was a control freak.

Perhaps it would be better if you reported facts rather than rumors:

"You're a developer. What is your dream? Your dream is to get it in front of every iPhone user. That's not possible today. Even big developers would have a hard time getting their app in front of every iPhone user. We're going to solve it, with what we call the App Store, an application we've written to deliver apps to the iPhone. And we're going to put it on every single iPhone with the next release of the software."

App store looks familiar—it's a lot like the iTunes app for the iPhone. Featured items, categories, top lists, searchability, the whole thing.

Tap the price (in the demo it was free) and then tap again for Install, and it downloads—over wi-fi or cell network.

You can also buy programs via iTunes and install them from your computer, if you like.

If the developer updates your app, the App Store tells you that an update is available, and you can see what's been updated, tap the update button, and your app will be replaced by the updated version, over the air, all automatically. "So we think this is pretty cool," Jobs says.

"The App Store is going to be the exclusive way to distribute iPhone applications," Jobs says. "We think we've got a great business deal for developers." Developer picks the price. Developer gets 70% of the revenues right off the top. We keep 30%. No credit card fees for developers. No hosting fees. No marketing fees. "And it's paid monthly," Jobs says. "This is the best deal going to distribute applications in the mobile space."

So developer picks his price (not Apple), developer gets 70% of the revenue, sounds good to me. And I don't see anything about Apple deciding what gets on there other than:

""Will there be limitations? Of course!" The slide says: Porn, privacy, bandwidth hog, unforeseen, malicious, illegal."

I'm sure Apple is the only company out there that places restriction on the use of its equipment.

To add to the pricing structure, developers of free applications will not be charged for Apple to deliver their applications through iTunes.

Actually, it can be downloaded by ANYONE right now. Assuming you can get through, the site has been very busy since 2PM....

So, what language would you develop your apps in? Would it be Java, PHP, JSP, PERL, etc? I write software, but I typically work with eRoom APIs which use com, vbscript, VB, C#. I also write software for Documentum using Java and C#. This looks like a potential avenue for distribution. I'm kinda excited.
