Funny, most are asking for direction/routes going the other way. LOL
I'm flying into Ft. Myers to pick up my new-to-me Class A and driving home.
Considering a 6-8 hour drive per day, can anyone identify best routes and nearest overnight CG's for this trip?
Thanks and wish me luck...never owned a moho before.

I usually go up 81 through PA from NC to New Bedford MA. But this completely depends on the weather. This time of year can be unpredictable with snow. From Fla to NC you can go up to SC on 95 and then take 77 into Charlotte NC. From there take 52 to 220 to 81 to 78 to 287 into NY. In NY I get back on 95 and run all the way to MA. This saves a bunch of $$$ on tolls and the drive is much nicer. It usually takes me 13 hrs to go from NC to MA. My mom and Dad just mad the trip from MA to FLA. They took 95 all the way down until they got to VA. THen they headed west here. They said the tolls were high because of the 5th wheel but the roads weren't too bad. They did have several tunnel restrictions to deal with though. No tunnels and very few tolls the way I suggested.

Assuming you get over to Rt. 95 somehow (via Rt. 4 from Tampa to Daytona Beach), 95 up to Richmond is pretty straightforward and easy with plenty of places to get gas if you're unfamiliar with the cruising range of your new MH. I'm guessing that a drive from Ft. Myers to Jacksonville is a full day's drive, so your first stop could be either Hance's or Kingsland KOA on the GA/FL border.. both have pull-thrus and are nice CGs. From there, another day's drive would get you into NC and the Smithfield KOA in Selma. From here, though, it gets a little tough. Your route would depend on whether you feel confident enough to tackle the "mixing bowl" around the DC/Baltimore area or would prefer to take your chances in the PA mountains. A third option is to head east from Richmond and go up the DelMarVa peninsula. The latter two routes would give you more options re: camping.
If you can get a Mass. FastLane pass for your MH beforehand, that will help save tolls and time if you opt for 95 up to the NJ Pike. We used to take the Pike to the Garden State Parkway to 87-684-84; now we prefer to jump off 95 and head north through PA to the NY State Thruway to the Mass. Pike, though I imagine this would be a bit out of your way. The George Washington Bridge via 95 is another travel bugaboo which some RVers try to avoid.

If you have a GPS system then map out the various routes and compare the various mileages then consider fuel costs to toll road costs. As fuel costs continue to increase, the shorter route will probably become more economical considering stable toll fees. Bottom line we choose the shortest route this past Dec after trying the longer route last May. Enjoy the trip!!!

Streets and Trips is VERY cheap, and you'll have a route fully detailed - further, for a bit more money, you'll have full on the road GPS to guide you. Of course, you'll need a laptop or to use a printout of directions.
S & T gave me a route up 95 - 3 days, 37 minutes, driving 8 hours per day.

How exciting! We did what you're doing a few years ago. Flew down and picked up our new to us motor home. I was very nervous as we had never driven a DP or a 40 footer before. We drove straight up 95 through DC and all. It was a bit dicey but it saved us time.
Enjoy your trip and take your time.
