I will be driving this route in a week in our 36' Southwind (see signature). I would rather not retrace through Los Angeles if at all possible. My mapping software (DeLorme) shows the 101 as the quickest route I see a route that goes through Palmdale CA using 126 out of Ventura to 14 to 18.
We are not phased by steepness or twisties, but long stretches of rough road or low overpasses (under 12'6") can cause real troubles. Is this a reasonable alternative if we are not in a major hurry.

You should be fine on the 126. There will be no rough roads or low overpasses through that area. The grades on the 14 are not that steep (maybe 5% in some areas). No roads in the area are twisty. You would take the 126 east to the 5 south to the 14 and take the Pearblossom highway exit (which I believe is hwy 138 to the 18 to I15 to Vegas.

Not sure about the 126, but be aware, the 18 has stoplights long the way in some spots.

softballjunky and hotrod4x5 thanks for the quick responses. You have provided me with the information I need. Anything is better than more time on the LA Freeway system. Stop lights are a normal hazard of avoiding freeways, interstates and other such limited access roads.

I take that route (101 - 126 - I-5 south, 14 north to pearblossom off ramp to Victorville to I-15 to Las Vegas) every time I head East on I-15 to or through Las Vegas. We generally stop in Victorville at Costco to top off gas tank and have lunch.

That's the way we go to Las Vegas starting at the 126 where it joins the 5...you should have no problems with it at all.

It is a few miles further but much faster to stay on 14 up to 58 near Mojave instead of taking 138 and 18 over to I-15. 14 and 58 are freeway most of the way to I-15, there is a short 5-10 miles of two lane but no traffic lights. I lived in Oxnard for years and only used the 138/18 route to go east if I was looking for meat products from the sausage outlet along that route. You must also be willing to deal with slow vehicles in no passing zones, and traffic lights.

Here's my two-bits worth. Getting to Barstow from Hwy 14 via Mojave is 25 miles longer than using Hwy 138/18. Hwy 138 and Hwy 18 both have more 4-lane sections and both are decent roads. Just avoid Friday evening and Sunday afternoon when you'll have to compete with the Las Vegas and Colorado River traffic.
