I believe all current wine corks are synthetic, not real cork. I would not suggest them as a firestarter. If you do find real cork winecorks, great, but don't burn plastic, please.

I use the wax/ wood manufactured firestarters wrapped in saran, forgot the brand. One half, plus shreaded paper and small pieces of dry wood start easily. I think the pinecones dipped in wax sound cool, but I think the mess of pitch from picking them up until waxing them wouldn't be worth the effort. I guess for the fulltimers who are prepared for DIY on the go, you probably wax them minutes after picking them up..... I do have extra burners that use self contained propane can's for emergencies, etc, I just am not used to on-the-fly thinking....lol

No, all current wine corks are not synthetic. I use cork only, wouldn't even cross my mind to use plastic as a firestarter.

Yes, you can leave the can in the fire, or you can shove it out and kill the flame once the fire is started. You can use the same one to start quite a few fires that way.

My husband will use tongs to pick up the can, place a log on top to squelch the fire, let it cool, and then store. He prefers the small potted meat cans better than the tuna cans. Remember to pick up the can and dispose of it once the fire is out if you leave it in the fire.

I agree Canope, Trioxane fuel bars are the way to go. I have used them for a couple years now and have great success with them even with damp tinder.
