You can't tell much about coverage maps, they are not always up to date. Sprint has EVDO in Big Spring, TX and there is nothing shown in that area..
OP asked if it would be fast enough; my experience has been that if someone was exposed to high speed internet, nothing else would be fast enough. EVDO is NOT as fast as cable or DSL. With a sprint card you can only get EVDO connection in certain areas (although they say they are adding more) if the area you camp in doesn't have EVDO but you have adequate cell service you can connect at a speed just a little faster than a dialup modem. This is just my honest opinion and I am an expert on my opinion. :-)

Could you please tell me where one can purchase this router. I would appreciate it.

I purchased mine off EBAY for $139.95. I bought the Cradelpoint 350 and bought an auto adapter too for about $35.00. I think the 300 has a backup battery in it in case you want to use the router without being plugged in. I did not think I needed that so I saved $30.00. I received it in 2 days and it works perfectly. It was also a breeze to install as it came with the software already installed. It was the cheapest price I could find anywhere.

It is a little expensive, so I am considering canceling the cable modem service at our stick house and using the cell phone broadband internet service at home when we are not traveling. Does anyone have experience with this service? Will the service be fast enough to be adequate at home? We mostly just surf the net, but we occasionally download files.
I use Sprint all the time and am quite pleased with the service. I am using a Sierra Wireless 595 card attached to a D-Link DIR 450 Router. Normal performance, I usually camp in areas that have EVDO Rev A, very fast downloads and good uploads. Worst case -- I was in an area that had standard service, performance was about twice the speed of dial-up. And the think to think about is they are very quickly upgrading their service to EVDO Rev A so things just keep getting better.
My home DSL is nothing to shout about, best case I get about 220k up and about 400-450 down. My EVDO card beats that every time, no exceptions. Only reason why I haven't disconnected my DSL is I use the card when I travel.
Strongly recommend the service. Card and router combo works great -- if you're curious where it will work go to http://www.sprint.com/coverage before you plan your trip.
When we went to the Kansas City RV Show, Sprint had a booth set up showing folks how they could set up a mobile hot spot. They had some really cool looking new routers, one that even accepted the Express cards -- would have noted their names but I was happy with my D-Link router.
Cheers

I don't have any personal experience with this, but it does list the Sierra Wireless 595U which is USB, along with a list of other phones that can work as a Phone as a Modem (providing you pay a little extra on your plan).
