I am getting pretty tired of poor, expensive and/or non-existent Wi-Fi at campgrounds, so I am considering getting the Sprint EVDO service along with a router so we can use two laptops in the RV. It is a little expensive, so I am considering canceling the cable modem service at our stick house and using the cell phone broadband internet service at home when we are not traveling. Does anyone have experience with this service? Will the service be fast enough to be adequate at home? We mostly just surf the net, but we occasionally download files.

Check firedude's website and read his comments with Sprint.

Check to see if you have Sprint BroadBand EVDO coverage at your home address at this site:
http://coverage.sprintpcs.com/IMPACT.jsp
make sure you click on 'data' section. it defaults to voice. you need to be in orange colored area to get fastest possible speeds.
assuming you are in EVDO area, and assuming you get good signal and a normally operating tower, you can expect 400-1400kbps download and 200-600kbps upload.
how fast is that compared to your cable modem? go find out by doing a speedtest at this site: http://speedtest.net
a word of caution. don't trust sprint store personnel who have likely never used an EVDO data device... look for experts who routinely help RVers like yourself and provide support after the sale.

Contact 3Gstore.com. Absolutely outstanding customer service from Alex who also is highly competent with the EVDO technology. After a series of email's and phone calls to assess our needs, I gave him the order at Noon today and they have already checked out the Sprint card and router and FedEX has picked up the package! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

You're tethering a phone? That can be risky if you are a heavy user.
Your performance away from home may not be so good as I don't know that you'll get broadband along freeways or in remote campgrounds. I sure hope yours is better than my ATT Edge service. It's terrible anywhere but in cities. I don't camp in cities.

We have a Verizon aircard for the PC but wanted a wireless connection in the coach so we both can use the internet at the same time. A router was what we chose and it works very well. We get broadband at or near larger cities and regular (snail) service out in the boonies. We have been in several places with zero signal so keep that in mind too.
We just take the aircard out when we are not using the coach and we can use it in our laptops anywhere we get a Verizon signal.
We are no longer slaves to campground Wifi. I may still use it from time to time but we rely more on the aircard now.
If you want nearly universal coverage you will have to go with a motosat on your roof and no trees in your campsite.

to those using USB aircards. if you have the usb version of the air card and have more than one person who wants to use the internet at a time cradlepoint makes a ctr-350 router that you plug your usb air card into and you can share your connection with others using wifi. it is very simple to install and works great. it is very small and much less expensive than similiar products. i have verizons version and love being able to get on the internet practically anywhere.

If you are planing on a EVDIO card with router. Be aware there are a couple of competing products which are in fact just that
One is "internet-in-motion" about $2,000 last I checked at RV stores
The other is "Surf Trek" (Or perhaps Trek Surf) from www.dustyfoot.com
I have looked at both, actually like Scott's (Dustyfoot) product a bit better in appearance, they are identical in function, Scott is 1/2 the price of I-I-M
Nothin adds excitment like something that is none of your business
