Better late than never........but we need help.
We are 2 widow ladies deciding 'times a wasting". I haven't been
out and about RVing for a number of years.
We just started to plan a trip from Florida to California in May '08.
Our main goal is to spend most of our time in CA in the woods.
How do I begin to get campsites in Yosemite, Sequoia, Redwood, Lake
Tahoe at this late date? (And Grand Canyon)
I'd appreciate all tips relating to the above questions. Thank you
for taking your time to assist us.

Yosemite is a must for a trip to California. The scenery is breath taking. Here is a picture of Crane Flats campground in upper Yosemite when we stayed up there.

You might want to also check out some of what Southern California has to offer.

I hate to say but you will be out of luck getting reservations at the popular destinations you mentioned, this late in the year.
Your only bet will be private campgrounds near the mentioned destinations if there are even any of those available.
If it's possible to alter your time-frame, mid September is when you will find many of these areas available again when the kiddies return to school. And in California, the weather is wonderful after Labor Day.

We had reservations months in advance at Yosemite, but during the week, there were lots of spaces open at Crane Flats. On the weekend however, that's another story. I think they may just have problems on weekends for many areas.

Now just a cotton pick'in minute here ladies!! What are you two self respecting young gals going to do out in the woods??
Sorry I couldn't resist/ My doctors tell me I am making some progress.
Seriously , we spent most of two summers doing what yer fix'in to do and we had no troubles except over major holiday weeks where we made advanced reservations.
Have fun and no hugging the bears!!!!

If you "haven't been out & about RVing for a number of years," I hope that you are using the time between now and your departure to brush up your RVing skills and to get that RV into top condition. The best trip is a safe trip. Have a great one!

You didn't say what kind of rv you're driving. If it's small and maneuverable you can find campsites in National Forest campgrounds near the popular sites you mention (dry camping). Here is a link to a great site that reviews these: heherere If you need hookups there is a small rv park in Oakhurst that is within driving distance of both Sequoia/King's Canyon and Yosemite. It nice and has a river running by it. You can do a search on this forum for Yosemite reservations and you will find dozens of strategies people use to get these prized sites.

I would recommend getting a book called "Camping California" published by Foghorn and written by Tom Stientra. It organizes the state very well and gives almost all of the campsites, their facilities and grades them on a scale of 1-10, 10 being best. It also includes all contact info, costs and directions. I have also found two books called "Mountain Directory West" and "Mountain Directory East" valuable for road and route information. Good luck with the trip.
