My wife and I just purchased a 2005 King of the Road Royal Villa. We are taking it out for the first time this weekend. The electric hot water heater works with no problem. My question is how do I get the LP gas to run the hot water heater???

With it being a 2005 I would assume there is a separate switch for the electric as well as the gas...

Can you tell us more concerning why the gas is not working? (pilot lighting? any clicking? gas turned on and flowing? propane tank full?etc)

I know both tanks are full. I don't know how or where to light the pilot light (or if I even have to light it). The heat is working so I know the gas is flowing.

Make sure you have LP in your tanks and that the valve is open. There will be air in the gas line that may take a little time to purge. You have a gas ignitor switch with a red light on it. Turn this switch on and the ignitor should automaticly light the water heater. You can switch off the electric to do this. You will know when it lights by looking outside your rig where the water heater exhaust is. You will be able to hear it burning.

When we first get to a campsite and set up, to purge the gas lines I turn on the stove top burners for a minute or so. This seems to clear out any air in the lines and then the refrig and water heater seem to work fine.

Yes, it may take a minute or two to purge the gas line, but also might suggest, along with the switch inside for the gas hot water, there is also a switch on the heater itself (lower left hidden behind about everything on mine) that needs to be set for the gas ignition to come on.

This certainly is good practice. We do this before we leave home and when we set up. We also run water in the shower for a few minutes to remove any trapped air in the water lines as well. The water heater should have electronic ignition so no need to mess with the pilot if I am correct. It should also know when to switch from gas to electric and vise versa. You may have an auto switch that is on electric. Did the manual for your particular unit come with it?

I've checked the manual and couldn't seem to find anything. I have one switch on the wall above the kitchen sink and then another one in the box where my slide buttons are. They both will glow red when I turn them on. I guess I just need to figure out which one is which.

I have had this happen before, as stated above you probably have to purge your lines (or unpurge). Run the stove top burner(s), let it run a minute and then try to light your water heater. Should be fine after that but if not back to square one. Hope this works for you!

Do you have switches on you control panel where you read the tank levels? If you do there will be one that says water heater pilot. Turn it on. The yellow light will come on and then go off. It goes off when the pilot lights. To turn off the heater, turn off the pilot switch. Hope this helps.
