The family and I had planned on two weeks off in July. The first week at the Outer Banks and the second at Myrtle Beach. Now both me and oldest daughter have new jobs and youngest has a band camp. The only time that we can all get away together is the week of June 7th through the 14th.

We live 20 miles south of Pittsburgh at the I79 I70 Junction in Washington PA. I prefer the beach but this early in the season and having only one week I am not sure if I can get far enough south to have warm temps and water at this time of the year.

I am looking for ideas that would fill a week and hopefully a days drive (8 - 10 hours approximately) from home.

My family consists of me DW and two daughters age 21 and 16. We will also be traveling with some dogs.

Any advice would be appreciated both destinations and campgrounds!

Thanks Dave!

Either the outer banks or Myrtle beach will be warm enough that time of year. We usually go down for Memorial day and it is warm enough then. We have 8 days reserved in Myrtle starting the 14th. A lot of schools around here get out the week of the 10th so you should be able to beat the after school rush.

Dave,

Have you looked a little closer to home like Deep Creek Maryland or Rocky Gap State Park just east of Cumberland, these are great spots and the time and money saved on Gas and Travel could be used for some fun on the lakes.

While it might not be as warm it might just be fun – lots to see and do at both places with nice beaches.

Chincoteage/Assateague areas may be warm enough for swimming. Or you might find your daughters would like the Cape May, NJ shore (might be a wee bit cool), or maybe even Ocean City, MD. The boardwalks with all the boys, and shops will be appreciated by the girls!

As I recall, Virginia Beach ocean temp was still quite chilly in early June. I would say you should be fine with Myrtle Beach or possibly the Southern Outer Banks area. Have been to both areas in early June and remember the water being just fine.

While it is the coast, it isn't warm, but Acadia National Park in Maine is pretty that time of year and it is before all the crowds. About 10 hours from you I think.

Someone mentioned Deep Creek Lake, not much to do there for a 21yr or 16yr, unless you like to rent a boat and go fishing. The lake is going to be pretty cold to swim in, at the beginning of June. Heck, the lake is cold in August. Ocean City is a thought, but that is the start of Senior weeks in OC. Lots of 18yrs olds running around. It's tough to find a camping spot near OC. I called over the weekend and the 2 main campgrounds are swamped and booking up fast. How about Williamsburg and then maybe head down to Virginia Beach? Good Luck in your search.

Thanks for all the input!

Deep Creek Lake is out because we actually had a mobile home there in a combination mobile home / campground park for over 15 years! The owner passed away and the kids sold the property to develop very high end homes. I think that if we went back it would only open old wounds.

After discussing with the family I believe that we will probably head to Myrtle Beach and stay at either Willowtree or Myrtle Beach Travel Park depending on availability. I just need to check that the week of June 9th does not have a group event that will crowd out the area such as bike week etc.

Thanks again for all your help!
