I stopped for a couple a two summers ago along a lonely stretch in Utah on I70. They said they had been waving for 45 minutes in 110 heat for help. I gave them the fuel out of my generator gas can and they were on their way.

Last summer climbing a 10% grade in 100+ heat I stopped for an old beatup pickup with its hood up but the driver said he just needed to let it cool and waved me on.

Near a city I would be less prone to stop because help is close but when people are out away from a city I do stop if there is reason to think they are really stuck.

Same here... Unless I'm on a schedule, I usually stop, especially if I'm on my way to or from work. People find it comforting to see a military uniform strolling up to check on them. I guess they at least know I'm not there to rob them...

I am more than happy to stop and give someone a hand. However, I feel the onus is on them to ask because they may not even need or want help. If they give a wave to stop I surely will, if they don't I won't.

I always stop for fellow RVers and motorcyclists.
I once stopped to assist two MH's that were on the side of the road. One was a Pace Arrow, broken down due to a driveshaft issue and the other, a Rexhall, which was the company I was working for at the time.
I arranged a towing service as well as a ride to the next exit and handed the owner of the Pace Arrow my Rexhall business card.
A few weeks later, the CEO of Rexhall stopped by my office to commend me on helping these people out. It seems that the Pace Arrow owner had his rig towed to a dealership and traded it in on a new Rexhall because he was so impressed by my concern and service and then e-mailed Rexhall and mentioned me.
I'm not "tooting" my own horn here but just letting you know that any help one offers will many times come back in a much larger way. And that "payback" many times is only a heart-felt "thank-you" which is always enough for me.

I'm with weathershak, we'll call & make a report of breakdowns, accidents, etc. We are not handy and don't carry extra fuel cans, so couldn't be of much assistance. If there was a drastic emergency - i.e. a flaming wreck that occurs right before we get there, etc. - we would probably stop if there was enough space to pull over safely and try to help.

I have stopped numerous times when I felt it was safe, both in terms of highway safety and personal safety.

I carry a siphon hose so I can get gas from my tank (or get get gas from someone else's tank if I'm the fool who ran out!) and I have tools for minor fixes. In one case in Utah on a Sunday far from towns, a fellow and I used my compressor and tire repair kit to fix his tire so he could avoid running on his compact spare.

I always stop if possible to do so safely, like many others I have stopped to offer assistance when none was really needed (potty breaks etc.) but I have also stopped many times and been able to help someone out. I believe in "Pass It Forward" if someone stops to help you then the next time it's your turn to stop and offer assistance.

I've actually never seen a stranded RV before. I've seen them pulled over, but never broken down or anything like that.

We don't stop. We make a call to the police to report the disabled motorist. I've cut too many people out of cars on local highways to feel safe in stopping without proper emergency lights.
