Looking at purchasing a dish for the new f'ver and boy can this be complicated!!!!!!! Wanted to see if anyone has tried the VuCube? It is a portable and from what i have read seems the way to go if your not worried about HD reception w/ Direct TV.

We just purchased a regular dish on Ebay ($ 25) for DirecTV and built a tri-pod ($ 15)for it and it works great. We bring our box from the bedroom which is not HD and have not had any problems yet.
Used to have one of the small ones that they sell at RV places, but it was always hard to get a signal with it.

I got the extra dish from the dtv guy for grins. He would not break loose with a free lnb so I got it at walley world, Best Buy has them also.
I use a tripod from Lowes that is for mouning a roof antenna on a house and a piece of the right size conduit is the pole that the dish sits on.
The box comes from the bedroom like stated before.
This is not a HD set up though.

I've done the tri-pod and dish setup before, and it works. If you're even remotely close, the signal meter on your DirecTV box will beep and help you lock onto a good signal.
However, the LNBs on the home dishes are very sensitive to shock. We camp in the desert, where wind is a daily part of life. I've had 3 dishes blow over. After each blow over, the dish has failed to work.
I too am looking at going the VU-Cube route. I like the idea of a portable dish that is NOT attached to the vehicle.

This past weekend the DW and I went for a short trip. I borrowed my father-in-law's back up portable Wingard dish out of his Prevost coach. I had 2 extra DirecTV boxes that I put in the living room and bed room of the 5th wheel. I got up Saturday morning and was up in running in about 20 minutes. It was actually pretty easy and I got a great siginal and picture.
You can buy the Wingard for $120 - $140 from Camping World. I just can't justify almost $700 for the VU-Cube.

I bought a VuCube this winter and have tried it a few times already throughout March. Seems to be a little more subject to bad weather disturbance than my stationary dish on the house, but reception is fine most of the time. Set up is about 8-10 minutes. Set it out, point it SW, put signal meter on tv, and use remote to find strongest signal.

I called Directv and told them that I had been a customer for 10 years and have always bought my own equipment. I then pointed out that they are giving free dish and tripod to new customers and I would like one. They sent me one no charge.

I've wondered about the Vu Cube. I have a dome on my 5th, and I've never been in enough trees to keep from getting a good reception. We go to Colorado a lot, and I'm always afraid it won't work, but it does. The dome is the easiest, but the Vu Cube is more versatile. As far as one on a tri-pod, I can't get them to work. Just not my cup of tea. My son in law has his working in minutes. Sure is disgusting. O well, he's of the young generation.

Thanks for all the feed back. I want something to where i can bring my LCD from inside the 5'ver and sit it outside for a game or race. We usually have a lot of people at our campsite and this seems like a great option since it doesn't require an addtional power source. I have found them as low as $609 on the internet. Greg
