I could but the rep at Direct TV said a dome would not be a good choice for me due to where we camp. Not to mention the $1100-$1500 price tag that comes with the domes depending on which model you choose. He said not to many of the new domes have the new KA band w/ the 99/103 frequencies yet that are required for HD pickup. Like i said in my openming post, this******gets complicated!!!!!

VuCube is certainly making its presence known. Some of the Nascar teams are using them on their pit wagons in place of dishes. Like others have said though, I have a hard time justifying $700 for the Cube. That will be me a lot of fuel!!!

Padre1,

Thanks for the reply to the PM. U must be a silver tongue devil. I called DirecTV this afternoon about getting the free dish and tripod. They acted like I was on crack (and I've been with them since they were Primestar). I guess I'm going to have to bite the bullet and buy the Wingard. The father-in-law is back from FL.

Direct TV is coming out to the house next week to install two new HD DVR's and provide us with DSL internet service and phone service. They are going to give us a 5LNB dish for high-def reception, even though we already have one mounted to the roof. The new one will be attached to a tri-pod and used in the trailer. We'll load as much HD programming on the second DVR as we can and take it along to watch recorded HD programs. We'll also set up the dish to watch other high-def programs.

There will be some added costs to convert your receivers and dishes to capture HD programming but eventually all of us will have to make that transition, so why wait? If you already have a HD television, why go out and spend good money to get a bad picture on that television? I know because I spent over $2k a few years back to get the KVH Tracvision "in motion" dish mounted to the roof of my truck, so we could watch satellite programs on a 17" laptop while driving down the highway. Very cool toy but outdated today, and so is the 17" Sony VAIO.

The best analogy I can come up with to compare HD programs with standard Def. programs is the scene in 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' where Jack Nicholson is playing poker with the crazies and Martini (Danny Devito) breaks a cigarette (worth a dime) in half and says; "I'll bet a nickel". Jack Nicholson tries to explain to him that a cigarette is worth a dime but when you break it in half, you don't have two nickels. You have, well, something that is worthless.

After viewing HD programming for some time now, I can't watch movies in standard def, or sports. It's not like you get to have satellite service for half the cost. You get crappy pictures at half the cost and have wasted good money on a high-def television. Just spend the cabbage and get the real thing. The promotions with Direct TV allow you a free HD or DVR upgrade and three months of free movie channels. It only costs $5 extra per month for a second HD receiver, which you can toss in the trailer when you head out. Get the DVR feature and you can pre-load it with all sorts of HD programming. All for a fraction of the cost of a (standard def) cube.

That's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

If you call Directv and ask them for the emergency kit they'll send it to you for 49.00.
The kit includes a 18" dish, a tripod,Dual LNB and 30' of cable all with instructions.
I have two of them.

You're wrong,...but thats JMO.

But its good to know that there are all kinds out there,...
1- those that apprecieate a good quality picture,..not called "Bad" or "Crappy"

2- those that like the new hi tech HD TV, but could live w/o it,

3- and those,...shall we call'em HD addicts, that "can't" look at anything else, and will pay any price for it, and expect everyone else to do the same.

So TRUE IMHO. TV for me is a pastime, not an obsession.
before they ran cable down my road, my off the air reception qualified as BAD and CRappy. now it is just fine thank you.
