So, how do I turn off the firewall? I hate to show my ignorance, but I can't figure it out. I found the security settings under "Control Panel" but can't figure out how to turn it off and on. If I didn't mention it earlier, I'm running McAfee.

If you are running McAfee then you should see their icon down in the system tray along with Outlook, internet coonection, etc. Double click on the McAfee and it should display what you have active, antivirus, firewall, etc., and then just deactivate the firewall. Install TurboTax and then turn the firewall back on. I have TurboTax and McAfee but have never had to deactivate the firewall but everybody's setup is different. How many users do you have running under XP and are you sure you are running as the administrator?

I shut the firewall off and ran the program. Same problem.

Do you by chance have multiple user accounts setup and the profile your using doesn't have admin rights? That would prevent you from installing.. Probably not but couldn't hurt to check..

Great-Dane: I am listed as the Administrator, but I'm not sure the computer recognizes that. I tried to run a "msconfig" once and the screen told me that I must be logged on as the Administrator. Yet, when I go the "Control Panel" and then "User Accounts" it show me as being the only one listed and the word Administrator next to my name. Do I need to do something?

When you turn on computer, does it just boot up into windows or do you have to click on user and log into system? If the later are you logging in as administrator?

Is there more than one user under user accounts? Sounds like you don't have admin rights, more like power user or some thing less which will cause headaches when trying to install apps. All my XP machines are joined to a domain which changes the look and feel of managing users vs. a home machine. Its been so long since I've seen user icons and that chess piece (think that was default user icon) I can't visualize to instruct you.

If you go to control panel and users, can double click and it should bring up menu of choices I think and one would be security with some preset defaults. Make sure you have admin rights. Logout or restart, then login again for changes to take place. Then try reinstalling the program.

Perhaps you could install the program after booting the computer into "safe mode".

Bob: I tried using Safe Mode. I got a little message window that said my video settings were 640 x 480 resolutions or 256 colors (or lower) and I may want to consider upgrading that. That makes no sense to me whatsoever.

Great Dane: When I turn on the computer I do not have to sign in with a password. While in Safe Mode I discovered that there are two of us listed as Administrators, myself, and one that just says Administrator. I was unable to change this. The "Guest" one is closed, so I'm assuming that when the computer boots up I'm the Administrator??

Thanks to both of you for your concern.

TurboTax has issues with a certain upgrade patch that may have been installed on your computer if you have kept up with patches for XP. To find out if this may be the problem, use Windows Explorer and search for the following on your harddrive:
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727

If you find this folder then this is probably the problem. I can either explain the fix to you here, deleting several Framework folders and re-installing TT and then downloading the latest Framework version or, you can go to TurboTax and search around their support site using "Framework V2.0.50727" and get the directions from them.

If you wish I'll send a PM with a phone# and can walk you through the fix.

With Glennts help, and a little over an hour on the phone, we discovered I did not have the update for Microsoft NetFramework 3.0. I was still running the 2.0 version. After down loading the update, the Turbotax program down loaded without any problems. Thanks to all for your suggestions. Thanks Glenn.
