Never fails...a post that started out about a company that makes gensets closing has to turn into a noise issue! Guess the red and blue crew has nothing better to do with their time so they have to turn to trolling unrelated posts to complain about noise now! How sad.
To the OP...I have had a coleman 1850 genset for over 9 years now. Never had to do "anything" to it except add oil and gas and clean the air filter. Never fails to start on the first or second pull either. IMO they are one heck of a work horse that will give "you" years of satisfaction.

It's just plain ol gut wrenching to hear people loose their jobs in the USA and maybe my buying two Chinese genset helped bring a end to this company. If so, it kills me to think I put someone out of work. I considered a Coleman Genset from HD but it wasn't a lantern or stove I used decades ago. Coleman must have? sold their soul to one too many mfg's.

I have a Powermate that's 5700 watts continuous. I paid $400 for it. There's no way I'll get that size of generator anywhere else for that much money. I guess the 3 year warrantee it comes with is dead.

I suppose I could go to HD and tell them a bunch of lies but that's not my way.

I think they would be more inclined to accept the truth at HD. I am going to keep the generator If I have problems I'll go to HD then, tell them the truth and they can decide what they will do then.

So far it runs perfectly and I have it in a noise reducing enclosure that makes it quieter than you $1000 Honda's and Yamaha's. It does have a Yamaha engine on it, does that count for anything?

Don't worry you won't be parked next to me listening to my generator run. If you find me and park next to me one of us will be leaving shortly after.

Good luck with the use of your Powermate. Folks here are saying they have had great success over long years with this brand. Your talents in sound suppression will be appreciated by many who are parked close, as you enjoy many happy camping days and nights. Hope it doesn't hurt the Coleman name just because of this plant failure. But there again maybe they should not have licenced a product of this nature. They may sing 'I sold my name (SOUL) to the company store'. Where is TE?

I've had great luck with the generator so far. Powered up the trailer with it after making an adapter and even ran some tools off it as well. I have no intention of replacing or returning it right now. I made the original post just to let Coleman owners know the new phone number. And for the noise police....do some research first....my model has a Yamaha motor in it. 68dB at 20 feet...Honda EU series...58dB at 20 feet...Mine...5500 watts continuous 6750 watts motor start surge.....Honda EU series...3000 watts. My generator...$500 Honda....$2000+ I think I got a GREAT deal on the generator. I can live with 10dB louder for $1500 in savings.

Hi All.

If you haven't had it very long, take it back to Home Depot and get your money back. Then put your hard earned money towards a Honda or a Yahama, and quite with the Coleman Powemate, as they are to darn noisey anyways. One thing that Home Depot hates to lose, is a Happy Customer. Try telling them, that if you don't get you money back, your going to take your business to Lowes, they hate that. Why do I know this, been there, done that on other items. Both Lowes and Home Depot hate each other, and will if they can, bend over backwards to keep a Happy Customer. Here is how Home Depot and Lowes looks at thier customers. They don't care about you today, but rather they look at your for the next 20 to 25 years, and they average approx that each Customer will spend at least $25,000 to over $50,000 in that amount of time. Its sure worth a try. Tell them, that you lost the recipt and you bought it for cash less than 30 days ago. If you do that, you will get your money back, or at least a store credit worth the purchase price. How do I know all of this, trust me, I do know. Both Lowes and Home Depot would rather keep a Happy Customer, as both Home Depot and Lowes already has it worked out with all of there supppliers, they give them full credit for any returns, working or not. Period. Good Luck. Happy Campiing, Dan & Jill

I love your attitude and agree with your reasoning as well! I couldn't have said it better. Enjoy your camping trips with your new genset.

When Bernie and Arthur ran the company they had a great return policy....but since they left, it is not the same company. No customer service and no one to even complain to in this country....You get shuffled off to India.

AS a result of the poor treatment I got over a chain saw...we have been shopping a t Lowe's. While building a house we spent lots of money at Lowe's that could have been Home depots.

As for the ONLY 10 dB louder noise...it is now linear, it is a logrythmthic scale. For ever 3 dB increase in level, it is a doubling of the sound power...so 10 dB is substantial.

Colman gensets are just as quiet as Hondas or Yamahamas. The only difference is the length of power cord required to achieve the same db rating as the Japanese models,ie: at 500ft the Colman is just as loud as the Japanese models at 20ft!!

I have a Generac that is as noisy at 500' as a Honda is at 20'!

It is nice for keeping the lights and heat on though, and no, I don't take it camping.

That's technically correct, however I have read that in perceived sound volume by listeners, 10dB represents "only" a doubling of the noise. IOW, one is twice as loud as the other.

I think you should get the quieter one if you will be camping near me

I have no idea what the db rating on my old coleman powermate 5500 is. However, when I need to use it I really don't care because I am either building something or trying to keep my house lit up after a storm. I haven't taken it camping with me, and probably never will unless boondocking by myself.

Good info by the OP by the way, and I was amused by the noise police throwing in their 2 cents!

I hate to see these people losing their jobs. Sad, very sad.
