Hello,
I am asking this for a friend of mine. I have a friend of mine who is getting ready to purchase a new vehicle. While making this purchase he wants to make sure he gets a vehicle that can tow a smaller (18-23') TT or HTT. To meet his family needs and wants, along with his budget he has chosen to go with a Dodge Durango. When making this purchase he is going to get the 5.7L V-8 with the factory tow package.
A question he had for me today that I wasn't completely sure of is; Should he get the 4 speed automatic transmission or the 5 speed automatic transmission? Why???

The 5-speed because it should have a lower 1st gear for towing and a better OD 5th ratio for fuel economy when not towing.

I thought the 5.7L only came with a 5 speed (545RFE)? That transmission has two overdrives, with 3rd gear being 1:1.

Generally, a five or six speed trans with overdrive (lower RPM's) should get better gas mileage...

The 545 is actually a six-speed, although they don't advertise it as such. Skips a gear in the upshift sequence.

They will be happier towing with the 5 sp and 3.92 rear.

545RFE and a 3.92.
3.55 is Weak for towing. I converted this year to a 4.10.
