My vacation plans changed and I called Myrtle Beach Travel Park yesterday to check on availability. The lady told me they were booked solid June through August. I could call back closer to my travel dates to see if there were any cancellations.
Looks like we will go to Willowtree as we do not care for the activity at Ocean Lakes, Pirateland etc.
Whatever campground you choose I would advise making reservations as soon as possible.
Good Luck and enjoy the beach!

We called Lakewood last year in May and were able to get 2 spots the second week in August. We enjoyed our stay greatly and will be back there in June this year.
We usually stay at Ocean Lakes, but were unable to get a spot there for June. We normally stay at Ocean Lakes in May & September. All of the campgrounds at the beach have their good points and followers. I was skeptical of Lakewood, but would not turn down a beach vacation based on the campground. We stayed in the section closest to Pirateland.

As a rule, the beaches are wider in North Myrtle Beach than south of the city center. Since there is more beach, less crowding. BUT, just yesterday, I got a flier from Ocean Lakes. They said the state is re-doing the beaches along the strand (adding lots of sand and grading) and are working in front of Ocean Lakes right now.
If a wide beach, fewer people and fishing is what you seek, maybe Apache since they have the only fishing pier or Myrtle Beach Travel Park.

Crowds and activities are not really a consideration for us. We just kind of roll with it. Mostly we want to be able to just walk to the beach, like we do on the Outer Banks, and be accessible to some of the tourist type things.
Life is too short to spend it all in one place!

Just so everyone knows, Myrtle Beach Travel Park does have openings after 8/16. We won't be there until the 17th and were able to get a reservation. I suspect this may be the case at a lot of the campgrounds as apparently school is back in session then.

Wow. I don't think the beaches at Myrtle Beach even begin to compare the ones in OBX. I guess it depends on why you are going. The time of year you are going the crowds may be gone already.(hopefully) :~>
We are going to OBX in August again this year. I really like OBX and it seems the farther south you stay, the fewer people there are. We will be staying at Ocean Waves again (as long as there is no bad weather during that time).
We usually only go to Myrtle Beach during the off season and when we do go , we stay at Myrtle Beach Travel Park. I have tried two of the big three and prefer myrtle Beach Travel Park to either of them. (haven't ever stayed at Pirateland)
Have fun,

Lakewood is a fine campground. We will be there for bikeweek in May.
