Looks like we've decided to go to Myrtle Beach this August (yup, nuts if you don't like the heat, I know!). The key feature we are looking for is the beach itself and have been spoiled by the beach at Camp Hatteras on the Outer Banks. We like the looks of Ocean Lakes but would like comments on which campground has the nicest beach. Also, are there any other beaches of interest in the area?
We stayed at Myrtle Beach State park last March. The campground is in the woods with a short walk to the beach. We loved it there. You might give that some consideration. Most sites have water & electricity, but a few with full hook up also. I am not sure what it will be like in the summer, but it was great last spring. Google it up, I think it has pictures, ect.

The best depends on what you are looking for. Ocean Lakes, Pirateland, Lakewood are all about the same. Lots of spots, very close together, full hookups usually, sites on or near the beach, lots of rental houses, lots of activity in the summer with golf carts and the general population humming about, and lots of activities.
I have never stayed at the KOA and the Myrtle Beach Travel Park but have seen good things about both.
Myrtle Beach State Park would be the cheapest. I have stayed their twice and would stay there again. Especially in the summer months. A little less traffic. There is no pool. But that does not bother me. I would rather be on the beach anyway. It is very wooded and shaded. Sites are more spacious, some have full HU's, bath houses are good, personnel friendly. Very short walk to the beach.
There is also Willow Tree Campground in Longs, SC. Not far from the beach but definitely a car ride, too far to walk. But it is absolutely beautiful. Much slower pace, less traffic, on a small lake.
So like I said, it depends on what you are looking for. Good luck with your pick.
Huntington Beach State Park is great. It's a little further away than MBSP. The sites are huge. Water and electric. No airplanes flying over, and a short boardwalk to the beach. A little less people. The beach is nice and clean.
The kids can play with the aligaters.

If you are comparing the actual beach itself. Ocean Lakes, Lakewood, Pirateland, and Myrtle beach state park are all next to each other so there isn't much difference in the beach itself. For me it is usually which campground has sites open.
Unfortunately, in August, you might find it near impossible to get a site in any of the beach campgrounds. I also suspect that MB will be more of a "zoo" this year as the Hard Rock Amusement Park will be open and they estimate 20K visitors a day.
"beaches of interest"? Are you looking for fishing...shells...interesting critters???
