I stated initially, that we had an "incident" where she was "lost." It was decided at that time, that I would never NOT be able to communicate with my children again. In this day and age, you never know what can happen. When your child doesn't show up like she's supposed to, and you can't contact her . . . and the police are of absolutely NO help, what is a parent to do. It's a LONG story, and I may even have posted it here. It happened about four or five months ago.

That incident was the impetus for getting her a cell phone. We got it for her so that WE could contact her when necessary. The texting was an added bonus for her that she took advantage of and hoped to get away with. Obviously, it didn't work, so we are dealing with that problem.

Julie

PS, there is no such things as a "credit" when it comes to a cell phone. If you drop it before the end of the contract (even one that was simply added to an existing plan), there is a BIG cancellation fee. That's SOP for ALL cell phone companies.

Good deal mom, stick to your guns. My 13 yr old DGD was given a cell phone by her father (parents are divorced). He was told he should NOT allow internet access....he assured my DD that GD knew the rules.......would you believe she ran up a $3000.00 bill!!!! LOL LOL LOL I laugh because dumb idiot told my daughter she was responsible for 1/2 the bill. This from the guy that won't hold a job to pay child support. Course DD told him what he could do with the bill!!!! And yes, phone got taken away.

I work in collections for a cell phone company, you got lucky with only 200 text overages. You also did a GREAT thing by stopping it before it got into the thousands. You would not believe how many people wait until their bill is 2,000.00 before they even call to find out why. Then they complain when we have the nerve to shut their phones off.

There are people who give their children cell phones and 150 minute plans, then get mad when they go over, or people who call the Bahamas and then complain about the cost. It's all crazy.

I had texting disabled on DD phone when I ordered it. Text msg is the biggest rip off ever. At 10 cents a message, and what - 20 characters maybe? That's $5400 a MB.

Julie, You are doing a good job here in teaching her if she does not act in a responsible way that she will have to suffer consequences.
It is good that she learns it over a cell phone than something that may be far worse. GREAT job!

God Bless!

Sounds more like Mom & Dad bought the service from the wrong company. You should have found out how she was going to be using it, then shopped around for the most economical plan to accommodate that usage.

After all, you don't buy a bikini bathing suit when the program calls for a ball gown. We're on AT&T Wireless, with unlimited Internet & texting. Can't tell you how much (honey pays), but the texting was free with the internet access package. Shop around.
WOW !! I'm sure glad I never had your little spoiled Johnnie & Jennie apples in my classroom.

Apparently you don't believe in teaching children they must conform to certain societal rules.

Yessiree, the apples don't fall far from the tree!

Kris, the problem is we are all paying for the keeping of the spoiled brats that end up in jail due to never having any structure at home.

Julie, without a doubt, I think you were spot on in your decision to take away the texting feature. I feel you are teaching responsibility to you daughter and later on in life, she will appreciate what you taught her. Best regards, Chuck.

Mrs.Mik...I feel for you...my daughter did the same when she was 16 (she is now 21). She ran her bill to over $400. Her maternal grandmother bailed her out. DD had unlimited calling but always did text. Her current phone plan provides her unlimited texting.
