If you have a old TV connected to cable without a box you still need a converter.

A common misconception Cable companies want you to believe
Cable will be Required to send analog (no box) signal for at least a couple more years... the cable companies dont want to because they have to convert the digital back to analog and send it out on their lines ... for " basic" no box cable. and its a hassle for them plus they want to sell you more expensive packages and the analog takes up "space" in the line.

The Insignia unit I got runs on 120 volt only, Not a problem for me

I did get some good news today in an E-mail. A link to a Communications news letter, It seems the association of broadcasters is petitioning to halt the sale of converters WHICH DO NOT PASS ANALOG when turned off.

The Insignia I have does not pass. Thankfully the work around was easy and only needed stuff I had in stock. (I'm feeding it to the A/V in on the tv and just put a splitter in front of it so the TV gets Analog as normal and digital on the A/V in).. Actually, the "TV" is a monitor with a recorder as a front end but hey, same concept)

I did the same thing with a splitter, works great.

Just got two converter boxes from Wal*Mart yesterday. Tried them out this morning and found that we can't receive digital signals in our location. I know the Portland stations are broadcasting in digital now so that means that in Feb we will be forced to switch to cable or dish to get ANY TV at all. I hope the gov't is happy, going to cost us $50 a MONTH more.

On edit: According to the FCC site there are seven stations in our area broadcasting DTV, none of which our converters pick up.

If you are in Vancouver wa you can receive digital .. if you can receive Portland Analog uhf IE (49 22) etc stations you'll receive digital !!! There are MANY Digital stations in the Portland area all the normal stations also broadcasts DIGITAL .. you must have something connected wrong IT is CONNECTED TO A uhf capable antenna right?

I don't understand this. Note correction to my previous post. the Walmart ones are NOT analog pass thru. that might be your problem, you are receiving analog signals and they are not passed thru to your analog sets. ?????? But in Feb. they will be broadcasting in digital and will convert that???

Yep, and as I just reported there are six channels in Portland and one in Vancouver that are already broadcasting DTV. Tried two different converter boxes on two different TV's with two different TV's, no go. The NASCAR race is over so I'll give it another try anyway.

OK, found the problem, the Quick Start and full manual show that the setup screen comes up as soon as the correct channel is selected, that is NOT true, you have to manually select it. All I was getting was a screen message that no signal was found. Guess that was due to the setup not even started even though the manuals said it did. Got it on one TV now, but I'll bet I have to go buy an A-B box for my wife to be happy as (as someone else pointed out and I already knew) that there was no analog pass through. Under analog we have one channel 10, now we have three, plus some music channels I didn't even know existed. Now to go set up the other one (now that I know how)

lets make this simple, as far as your TV is concerned, the converter box works just like your cable box or sat box.

the BOX is the tuner it converts the incomming OTA DIGITAL signal to analog

you need an antenna

IF you are on cable, you NEED NOTHING, if you use cable all the time, you don't need a converter box

but when the cable goes out because of a storm, tornado, hurricane, downed power pole.. you won't be able to get any TV unless you have a 'converter box' to stick between your antenna and the TV set

that old antenna on the roof for emg TV won't be any good without the converter box

the converter BOX, has NOTHING to do with watching your cable TV

The cable companies can change to all digital any time they want and then you have a problem
