Depends on what the rules of the PARTICULAR rest area are. In Kansas and several other states they have a special area for RVs to spend the night and putting the slide out would be no problem. If you're just parking in a truck parking area there is always a chance someone will hit your RV with the slide extended as you would not fit into a single parking spot. Devils in the details.

Most of the rest areas that if been in while pulling my TT or 5er I have to park on the side of the rest area with the big trucks. Those truck spots are nice and long, but not really very wide. With the slides out you would be crowding the trucker trying to pull into the adjacent spot. These truck need to make wide turns to get into some of these spots. I would feel too venerable to have trucker smack into the slide. I believe many of the the trucker take a dim view of us RV'ers taking their overnight spots.

If you choose to overnight in a rest stop it is better to keep a low profile and be respectful of others by keeping your slides in.

The NYS Thruway rest areas usually have plenty of room and there are areas in the truck section that would allow you to do as you are asking. For that matter, the rear of the car section affords the same space or more and is usually empty, except for the occasional trailer... I see no problem and highly doubt anyone that mattered (LEO) would give you grief. Good luck, Mike

I spoke directly with our fearless leader President Bush concerning this issue and he said "absolutely no slides out in rest areas" Unless you leave you motors idling to use more fuel to help line his pockets,,,, I mean fight the war on terror.

If you're in the truck section pull throughs, then your slides will extend into the next slot. Thats not fair to anyone but especially the truck driver thats out of driving hours and needs to stop. If you can find a spot in the outer end of the car lot, then you might have a better chance.
I've stoped at a FlyingJ before where 4 rigs with slides took up 8 spots and we got frozen out of a place to stop. A little courtesy will go an awful long way.
