Why do some say that you weigh the truck, subtract the GVW and that what is left capacity, regardless of what your axles are rated for?

My truck is rated at 8800lbs and that is what I am told the max capacity of my truck with load should weigh. And in my case that leaves around 1600 lbs available for passengers, stuff, and pin weight. Sure the axles are rated for more but the total is suppose to be the limit. And what it can pull has absolutely nothing to do with this issue.

Perhaps you had an extra wrench or two in your tool bag!

I'd recommend the 3500 SRW. You can overload the GVWR of a 3/4 ton truck real quick with a 5th wheel. See towing weights link in my sig and do the math.

I believe the new Dodges are like the Fords F250/F350 and the only difference is the addition of rear overload springs.

Yes. Put a set of Timbrens on it to help the sag.

Yes, but I'd opt for the 3500 single rear wheel anyway for very little increase in cost. That adds mothing more than some factory overloads in the rear (at least it used to), and a higher GVWR.

It really depends what this 28' 5'er weighs. If you already have the truck then I would say to try it. If you are buying a new truck seriously consider the 3500 for the factory installed overload springs and extra capacity. If the 5'er is approaching 15k loaded you might even want to start thinking about a DRW.
