Years ago when we still tent camped we had a box of firewood stolen. Other than that we have never been bothered and I have not heard of anyone having any problems with campsite theft.

I haven't seen anything and heard of very little problems as long as one takes some kind of reasonable precautions such as locking up and not staying in creepy areas. I've had a lot more problems when living in houses and apartments which is reason #184,037 that I no longer live in such places. Since becoming a full timer, I noticed that if there's any kind of fulltimer community in the park, we all kind of watch out for each other.

A friend of mine here didn't have a break in, just a bucket and funnel that was outside stolen last year. Maybe $5 of stuff total. A couple days later I happened to see that same bucket and funnel being used by another camper in the park to fill 1 gallon water jugs. I normally have no tolerance for criminals and I catch someone, I tend to make life miserable for them. This time I very calmly decided that justice had in fact been served in full and walked on by without saying a word even though it torqued me off that someone could be that arrogant after what they did. You see, that same exact bucket and funnel was used to empty a port a potty a couple times a week for at least 6 months previously.

That's my main fear, that my apartment will get broken into while I'm away camping.

I have NEVER had anything stolen in over 25 years of camping. Well, at least not by people. There was that apple pie that my step-father left out on the picnic table that was swiped by a racoon.

I know some crooks do some really stupid things when committing crimes.

I would think no self respecting gangster would attempt too many robberies while campgrounds are actively occupied. I would think they would prefer the ones closed for the season with several units stored there.

Having said that, we lock doors, bicycles and have on occasion put chairs. grills etc away when gone for several hours.

We had a bank robber here not to long ago who had a for sale sign with his phone number, in the back window of his get away car.

Since moving to South East Alberta in '04, we've heard of at least 2 trailer thefts from dealerships in the area. One was an expensive 5th wheel unit. Can't remember what the other was. They just drove in, hitched up and drove off.

Last year a friend was camping, I believe, in Elkwater Prov Park. He went for a shower and left his watch on the sink with his toiletries. He felt comfortable doing that as didn't anticipate any problems at that campground. He came out of the shower and his watch was gone.

It can happen anywhere, anytime. Just try not to make it too easy for the thieves.

We have never had anything stolen when camping. And we spend time mostly at State and National Parks.

Although we are careful, we choose not to spend time worrying.

That's what insurance is for.

haven't heard of any break-ins at campgrounds, but a couple returning to Pa. stopped at a crackerbarrel in Jacksonvile,Fl. when they came back to their rig after dinner, they discovered a window smashed out and blood all over the carpet. apparently the crooks left with a few small items and a hand that required medical attention.

Must be the part of the country we live in. I've never had anything stolen from anywhere except for a set of wheel covers stolen when I stupidly moved to Northern Virginia in the early 70s. I keep everything in my camper (TV satellite receiver, etc) and never lock it. Of the 3 houses I bought here (out of a total of 5), the owners didn't even know if the lock worked on the door since they had never been used.

Never heard of a break-in (bears yes) while camping. Have hard of various bits of theft and vandalism while stopped at stores and such. For example, some town punk stole my wife's chainguard off her locked bike in Northway, AK while at the grocery store.

Then again, I've learned not to invite theft and don't leave anything I care about laying around. My car was stolen in Philadelphia years ago and I don't wish that on anyone - worst feeling in the world to come out of work and just know you parked right there.
