Hello,
I noticed a lot of people have installed a Hunter Thermostat in their TT's. I was curious why people sleceted the Hunter Model #: 42995? Is this a special unit made to work better with TT's systems? The reason I ask is because I was curious if any digital thermostat would work? What does the digital thermostat have to have in order to work in my TT? What should I look out for when purchasing a digital thermostat?

We just purchased a new thermostat for our trailer yesterday. We opted for a regular old t-stat, one of the things you have to think about are make sure the t-stat is 12-volt and not 24 volt.

This has been covered quite a bit here. Search "thermostat" and every question you could ask has been answered. I would have posted a link to this info but I don't know how....

I think the reason the Hunter is so popular is that Walmart sells them for just $20.
Not just any thermostat will work in an RV but any of them that are battery powered should. A lot of residential ones are designed to run on 24 volts AC, and those will not work.

(Sigh) Ok here it is one more time.
A residential thermostat that uses internal batteries for power will work. These are designed for residential applications which are 24 volts but since the clock, relays and circuitry are powered by the internal batteries, they work on a RV's 12-volt system since the thermostats function will be as a switching device. Voltage doesn't matter in this case.
The other two types for residential systems will not work in a RV because they draw their power to operate from the 24 volt ac transformer for operation in a residential system. These are called "hard-wired" and "power-stealing".
As mentioned, the Hunter is used mostly because the instructions posted here on the Forum are for the Hunter, the price is right and they are easily available.
OK, we have covered again, the digital thermostat issue. Now let's cover operation of the Forum "search" feature!........

Hey Java,
Could you please retype that, I was sorta confused..
Just kidding, We opted to buy one that we didn't have to put a switch in for the high/low fan. A litle more money at home depot but we will see in the spring how it works.
And I also called the tele number on the back of the paperwork and the CSR their said that thermostat would work great in our TT.
Until then, Happy Camping and Good Luck

Greg, do you have a link to that stat or at least the make and model? I'm looking for one that has the HI/LOW/OFF switch instead of having to add one.
Thanks!

A lot of people use the Hunter thermostats because they are inexpensive and available at Walmart, I have a Noma 52-2593-2 thermostat that I picked up at Canadian Tire on sale for $9.99, the wiring is the same as the Hunter.

If you're buying a digital thermostat, then consider getting a programmable one. A bit more costly, but well worth the investment. For $34 (RONA hardware store) I can set the thermostat down for the nightime and have it come on in the morning to heat the trailer (and wake us up). For our last trailer and our present one, I purchased a 5-1-1 (program Mon-Fri, Sat & Sun separately) only because I like the features more than the 7-day programmable, or 5-2 day programmable ones I see. It just means I have to set three programs for the week, rather than one.
