DEPENDS on what size tank you have and IF you can see IN there ... to make sure it is clean.

One of my RVs has a very small black tank. You can't add 3 - 5 gallons of water to it without hindering the usage of same. Since I can SEE into the tank - from the toilet and valve side ...I do not add any water at all.

I is a good idea to add a few gallons to each so it can slosh around while driving. This will help keep the tanks clean.

We add 1 minute of water and 1 ounce of the smelly stuff to the black. This gives me around 6 to 8 gallons based on the water is flowing @ 6 or 8 GPM. Have never had a problem. I do add water to both blk & grey. At the home flush out site I fill it up completely again with fresh and dump again to really get her clean ( blk only). And then follow the tied and true method in my first sentence.

I never do this at the camp ground due to lines. People really on it.

Cheers

We flush the toilet 4 or 5 times and add a few handfuls of water-softener "rocks". The rocks bounce around the tank as we head on down the road knocking off any solids that may have accumulated as they dissolve.

After dumping the black water I fill the tank one some times two times and dump again, then I dump the gray water to flush the hose. I always put one to two gallons of water and the chemical in the black water tank. I never add any water to the gray water tank. It will get water while traveling by washing our hands ect. I was showed this procedure by my uncle in the 60's and it worked good for him and when I purchased my first TT in the early 80's I started doing this also and it has work good for me ever since.

Once you deal with a totally blocked up black tank like I have you will learn your lesson and add lots of water after dumping.

The only time it would make sense to not add lots of water is when you are going to boondock for a few days. Befor leaving and when returning on a boondocking trip drain and flush the tank thouroughly.

When putting your rig in storage always drain, flush and put lots of water back in the tank. This will keep the tank from drying out and will be ready for the next trip.

I bought the Tornado from Camping World. My toyhauler used to have the San-T-Flush system and that worked great. I was surprised to find out my MH did not have the same thing built in. Never had a problem with the Toyhauler and generally followed the add some water method after draining and then flushing with the San-T for a couple of minutes after draining.
We'll see how the Tornado performs on the MH after we take her on the first trip.

I agree and do this in the warm season...but I dont think you can do this in the winter (when storing)....I guess you can add a bunch of the pink stuff?

Lots of good ideas in this group. Normally, I fill ths black water tank to at least 2/3 before flushing. After flushing, I will dump chemicals into the lack tank with 2-3 toilet bowls full of water.

I like the ideas that have been given with respect to the following:
1: Ice cubes (2)calgon (3) adding dawn to the tank. I do have a question about the bleach in the tank. Is there a possibility of the bleach damaging the rubber seals??? Just curious,
