I just ordered a new Carriage Cameo from Lazydays. They would not process and place the order until they confirmed what my current tow vehicle was and confirm that the 5th wheel I am purchasing is within my tow vehicle's specs. More power to them. There are too many "newbie" buyers out there in the market that could be put into a unit by an unscrupulous dealer that their vehicle has no hope of pulling safely.

The one thing I will say about the dealer we purchased from was the salesman was very truthful about what I should have to tow our coach; unlike several others we visited that told me we could tow the 5ver we were looking at with our 1500 Silverado! It is up to the buyer to be aware!

In the park we are staying at for the winter (we leave on May 1st), we have a guy that traded in his MH for a 38' Royals International 5th Wheel. He ended up having to put all his stuff in a trailer, drop off his coach, and having the new 5th Wheel delivered to the park. The reason...Lazy Days refused to let him take possession, then tow it off their lot with his 1-ton truck and 18K hitch.

Apparently this guy sees no issues with his setup, but I applaud L/D for doing the right thing. I looked up the specs and it looks like this unit has a dry weight of over 17K pounds.

So, how many 5th wheel/truck combinations are really out there that are truly overweight?

that's strange to hear sense i watched a factory to dealer delivery of this same unit being hauled in on a 3/4 ton truck. if the tow truck has air bags or extra springs installed than it becomes capable of pulling the same as a 1 or 1 1/2 or 2 ton. they all have the same engine and transmision any way.

I dont know how many of you guys have ever seen a Royals International, but they are $200k heavy beasts! Id never think of hauling one with a HD pickup truck. The buyers of these are surely into MDT territory. I guess I look at it this way, if you can afford to buy a trailer of this caliber, you can certainly afford the right truck to pull it.

We learned the hard (expensive) way -- should have purchased a HDT to start with and saved $$$$. Our fiver weighs approximately 18K with 3,600 lb pin weight -- the 1-ton dually would handle the 5th wheel at its limits. We're very pleased with our older and more capable TV.

They sold him the unit and then said no to let him take delivery, very nice ploy. They reduced thier liability if it becomes an issue.

Call me a pesimsist but the only reason they are prob preventing folks from picking up a trailer with an undersized tow vehicle is that they were sued or had a close call.

tchil, your probably right I'm sure it was a lawsuit that made Lazy Days not let the owner pick the unit up at the dealership. What Lazy Days did is called CYA, and just to protect them. They still sold the unit. The results is they made a ton of money. People have been towing over weight for many years, some of us can remember Rver's towing with the family car. And you still see a few of the Air Streams being towed by cars? GBY......

Maybe LazyDays salesmen actually read the forums and know about being overweight and safety.

I do know I read somewhere possibly on their website that they have quite a few Factory reps on site. So their salesmen probably actually know an answer when asked.
