We did TOW about 2 1/2 weeks ago - sure - dusty and bumpy, but it has been over-exaggerated as being bad! I agree with the other writer - you are coming to see Alaska, right? We even drove up to Eagle and stayed in the BLM CG there - NOT something I would recommend with a Class A, but great in our B! It would be a shame to miss Dawson City - make the trip! ST

We are heading up the 11th of July. We won't do the TOW this time but have driven it twice before. Admittedly we drive a truck camper, which is easier than a Class A, but the road is not that bad...dusty yes but maybe we are used to it being from Idaho where the main North/South Highway is known as the Goat Trail!

Ok, ok, maybe I was a little hasty due to the fact that we had just finished spending two hours trying to get the dust off the motorhome and toad, inspecting the new chip out of the windshield, picking rocks off the toad, seeing all the new paint chips out of the toad's new paint job and vacuuming the entire inside of the MH including all the cabinets and drawers.
I have to admit that the view on top of the mountains was fantastic and the ferry ride across the river was really cool. We stopped about half way and had lunch where we could look in any direction and see 50 miles or more. I can truthfully say that we saw some of the most gorgeous country side this whole trip during this TOW trip.
However, you have to remember that the question was made by someone who has a 40' pusher....these things are not small nor are they really made to go four wheeling. They have huge windshields that will attract every rock and piece of gravel being spewed out by unconcerned passing motorist and those huge 22.5" tires really kick up a whole lot of dust. The long wheelbase can react to bumps and dips in a manner which those with truck/trailers and or truck/campers will not even notice. When two of these mammoths meet on a road that is only 20' wide with a drop off on one side, it makes for very interesting passing!
As I said, I would not do this TOW trip again in our MH, nor do I recommend others with similar vehicles to do so unless they are willing to put up with all the negatives that I mentioned above. Yes, we are here to see Alaska and we will continue to do so in spite of the terrible roads and inconsiderate drivers.

You going to go up to the Arctic Circle? Sounds like you really like rough roads.

We had 3 DP's in front, and one behind us on TOW. Also while spending 2 wks onDenali Hwy, we saw several as well. Saw a Class A in Dawson City that had a homemade PVC pipe frame with 1/4"hardware cloth cable tied to frame to help deflect rocks.Kinda neat.

We must have gone over the other Top of the World Highway, the good dirt one with some dust, little mud and few flying rocks. Did not see anywhere that would have been a problem for two vehicles to pass without one rolling down the side. Passed by tour buses and double tanker trailer rigs. Next time would miss Chicken the Pedro Dredge was interesting but not much else, found Eagle much more to our liking, most of that road is surfaced for the tour buses. Earlier in the trip we drove the Dalton to Deadhorse would not have missed that one but if you have problems with TOW. don't try the Dalton.
Have fun slow down and enjoy carry loads of quarters for the car washes.

Did the TOW this morning, in Tok this evening. I agree with Ron, I'll not be doing that again. Canadian side was okay, but the Alaskan side was the worst 100 mile stretch of road I've ever driven on.

Interesting posts everyone thank you. We're still in Hi Country in Whitehorse and will be for another week or so. KLM I thought I saw your rig in here but couldn't be sure 'til I saw your signature this morning.
We're still deciding where we are going and which way we'll get there. We are used to narrow roads and want to see as much as we can but want to be somewhat responsible to our rig and toad as we are fulltiming. We are fortunate to have lots of time. In the meantime I'm installing toad protection and enjoying time with family. Safe travels to all.

Yep! We sure are....but not in the MH. We'll take the 4x4 toad and leave the green monster at the rv park (River's Edge).

We are driving South on the Parks Highway enjoying Mt McKinley. It seems that the better views are from Denali State Park and NOT the Denali National Park. If it's cloudy just park and wait and you will be rewarded. This is our first RV trip to Alaska and it is so rewarding with all the beauty. We plan to be in Anchorage for the July 4th parade.
