We drove more than a little distance (out of our way) to revist my wife's childhood memories. The memories were more than a little tarnished by what we found. Some times things improve. Some times they get tacky. We just want people to understand what they are going to find when they get there.

"The only good thing is the brass plaque and concrete pad of the (FORMER MONUMENT)."
Again, just asking what the OP stated...
To not get nit-picky it is a Navajo National Monument not US National Monument. The monument is nothing more than a plaque on the ground showing the four states that come together there. It is pretty neat to be able to walk in four states with just a few steps. I don't believe that can be done anywhere else in the United States. Whether it's worth $3 each to do it is up to each individual. Persoanlly I believe our Native Americans have had a pretty rough go of it and it will not kill me to donate a few dollars.

We went there ONCE. We have paid far more than $3 per person to see other sights and many of those we would return to see again but not four corners. In a word, we thought that it was "cheesy" and not worth the money nor the drive.

Just think how bad it must have been back when we first put the Indians there.

I have the four corners on my list of places to see. Even with the negative comments about this place, I will still get there one day. I don't care if it costs four dollars, I still want to see it. I also don't care if they sell cheap tee shirts from lean to buildings. These things are what tourist traps are all about.
Some ask 'what happened to the Monument"? it is still there - the mound and plaque make up the monument and always was so (I first saw it in 1969).
And it always has been on the Navajo Reservation since the Rez was created. So nothing has changed except the Navajos' attitude and need to make a few bucks.
Yes - I agree that part is too bad but that is the way it is.
It still is a unique "corner" of the US.
Canada also has a 4-corners - anyone identify it? This is a quiz for all you travellers. PM me if you think you know or better yet - if you have been there (I have!)
John
The uniqueness of the site is that it is the ONLY place in the United States where four (4) states meet at 90 degrees.
"Tackiness" aside, IMHO it is worth seeing once, just to say you have been there and seen it.
There are many places that fall into this category, again IMHO. NYC is one, Disney World/Land is another, and there are many more. Places to go just to say you have been there and seen them.
We also went to four corners and paid the fee to go in. The drive was long but it was worth the $3.00 to us to know that we saw it and did not skip it.
I, and this is just personal, thought it was worth $3.00 to me moreso that the $10 I paid to see Meteor Crater in Arizona. My wife like both.
