We only have one propane tank on our trailer tent and don't want to add another tank as we don't want to increase the hitch weight. Is there a reliable way of telling how much propane you have left? Do they sell propane gauges that tell you how full the tank is or is there another way of finding out (other than running out and having no heat or cooking facilities !)

You can pour hot water over the take and it will show you a frost line.

There are small guages available which go 'in-line' and show when the pressure is low. Here's one example.
Also, while your stove, water heater, or furnace is running, you can often observe a condensation line on the tank which shows the level of fuel remaining, especially during humid weather.

There are a number of ways to determine the level of propane in your tank. You can buy a new tank with a built in gauge which are very accurate. You can buy an add on gauge that attaches to the POL valve which is a little cheaper and a little less accurate. You can pour hot water on the side of a cold tank and see the level of the propane within the tank by a sweat line on the outside. There is also a stick-on gauge that purportedly tells you how full the tank is. I guess the final and least bothersome is to pick it up and say to yourself, "This tank feels mighty light, I think I'll get it filled today!"

My TT tanks had a gauge on them. Really good idea to get one if you've only got ONE tank. With two tanks like most people have, it doesn't matter if one runs out.

Or lookout for one of the new plastic tanks. They are made of two pieces a solid outside and translucent inside so you can visually see the level. I saw this a month or so ago on Daily Planet (Canadian science news program) so I am not sure if people in the US can see it. No idea on price but may be worth looking into, http://www.litecylinder.com/cylinders.html
