As I mentioned in another thread, DW called local DirecTV vendor to inquire about DirecTV service and was told that as new customers we could not suspend service for 2 years, and that if we wanted DVR we would have to have two cables coming in to it. This was untenable as it is near impossible to run cable through a cellulose insulated wall. We thought that was the end of DirecTV. Thanks to some of your responses, she called DirecTV direct and got an entirely different story. If we subscribe to DirecTV, we can suspend service 2 times a year for up to 6 months, and we can have a DVR with only 1 wire coming in. Of course, we won't be able to record a program and watch another, but that's OK. Also, DirecTV is considerably less expensive than Dish. Looks like we're going to be new DirecTV customers!

be very careful with that your talking to the sales folks, they tell you what you want to hear. I went thur this and I'm stuk with 2yr contract , only two recivers work and I can't run the extra cable without a cost of 175.00 per line..please wait to hear from those on this forum to get clearification before you get stuck like I did..

You'll probably get either an HR20 (with an off the air tuner) or an HR21 which does not have a tuner. But there will be available an AM21 (I think that's what it's called) which adds a OTA tuner to the HR21. It's possible which ever one it, the unit will be refurbished.
As mentioned above, there will be a two year contract, but if your DVR quits working, they will replace at no charge, except for shipping. But then your contract will become 2 years again.
There is also a SWM (Single Wire Module) available that will let you use just one cable. It splits the single cable into two outputs for the DVRs with two inputs. But it will run anywhere from $280 to 4300. It is not a splitter or multiswitch.

You can always get a local Satelite dealer to buy your equipment from and install it for you. All our receivers came from a local dealer. They also rand the cabes for me. I have two cables on the DVR in main room, one on the DVR in bed room and one to the garage so I can use the TV in the MH when company comes.

All I did was conract DirecTV to activate the receivers. Which can also be done from your computer.

I just went thru this with Direct and I prevailed. They CANNOT extend your original term (2 years) IF YOU REPLACE EXISTING EQUIPMENT because it is defective. The key is to tell the person activating the replacement that this is an activation of existing equipment and not an activation of new/extra equipment(they informed me of this procedure when I complained). They CAN extend if you add extra equipment. I do not know their policy if you UPGRADE existing equipment (change from a standard receiver and upgrade to a DVR). Doug

One thing I forgot to mention was that since, March of 2006, any units you get from Directv are leased. I should have said that when I said Directv would replace it if it fails.

If you are replacing defective equipment ... THEIR defective equipment there is no extension ... you must have dropped a receiver and added one not "replaced" there is a difference! call them back and have it corrected. The leased Equipment will be replaced if defective not due to abuse ANY time! BTW the service contract rip of covers next day shipping ... big deal do without the tv for a few days and save the monthly charge

We use direct tv, & I carry a portable dish with me so I can set it up for the second input, but with the east & west coast feed we found that we can watch all the programs we want with one input. They are a pain to talk to but we have managed to get things suspended or turned on as we want. If you have service & they start with the run around just ask for the disconnect people, they will get things set up as you want.
