With the price of gas continuing to sky rocket, we have decided to stick closer to home for our week long summer vacation. We live in Lancaster county PA and are looking for a 2 to 3 hour treck in any direction. Any ideas are appreciated. We love camping in the woods, hiking, biking, shopping(antiquing), we have 2 boys ages 12 and 13 and they are game for anything and do not need alot of CG activities, they are easily occupied with just their bikes and fishing rods. We have talked about Harper's Ferry or heading north in PA. But we really need to stay with in 2-3 hrs, we pull a TT and the truck sucks down gas while pulling. (we were hoping to head to the Adirondacks or even down to the Smokies but that is just out of the question now)
Any thoughts?!

Thanks so much!
SJ Martin

I am just up the road from you in the Pottsville Area... My family and I just discovered the Wellsboro Area at the end of last summer. You have the PA Grand Canyon which has a 13 mile bike trail which you kids will love. There are also other activities in the area. We stayed at Stony Fork Campground, it was nice and small. This campground was not listed as the best in the area but it had a pool, pond and a creek your boys will love to play in.
Good Luck and have a nice vacation.

A lot of people will and are going to do the same thing, Staying closer to there home base, and enjoying the sights and sounds of what there state offers.
We were going to go out to the west coast states this year, but will instead stay in the midwest. Still plenty of things to do and see. But in most cases this increase in fuel costs, may only relate to a few hundred dollars per vacation. A bigger issue is that this added fuel costs will make EVERYTHING more expensive, from your camp site, your food, even to that beer you drink in the evening. OH WELL.

I wouldn't have canceled our trip to SD because of gas prices life is to short and you only go thru life once.
We had to cancel because I used up my vacation time for this year being there for my parents when they passed away last month.
We will be going next year even if gas goes to 6.00 a gal.

We look at it this way. We know that prices are/will be up so we just budget for it. We forgo doing some things and try and be a bit more economical about it.

On a 4000 mile trip at $3/gal and one at $4/gal is only $400 more. So we don't eat out as often or go to "pay" places.

With that said, just by change of pace, we are cutting our driving down to about half (2000 miles) and staying in the state of Fla. We haven't done the Keys and west coast of Fla. in about 10 years and have taken up kayaking. So instead of $1600 fuel bill we will have only about an $800 fuel bill. This will probably be offset by the way higher campground prices in the keys. I understand a cheap place is around $80 per night!!

Life is toooooo short to really worry about it, enjoy....

I am finding other ways to save money - we eat out only once a week now.
I am canceling my news paper (who has time to read it anyway),cancelling the guy who fertilizes my plalms (hubby will have to do it himself).....

I am still taking my two week vacation which is about 2500 miles round trip.

We can't wait to get to the States this summer to get the cheap fuel that we don't have up here. We are paying roughly around $4.75/gal at the moment. To pay $3.50 - $4.00 a gallon I'll take anytime. For me that's a saving of about 20 - 30 bucks for a full tank in my Ram 1500.

We are in the same boat. We wanted to travel out west this year but changed our minds due to fuel costs. Here are some nice places in PA that we like. Twin Grove KOA just north of Lebanon has a nice campground and a new pool. Knoebels is always good but we no longer camp in Knoebels we go down rt 487 a bit to J&D Campground. Much bigger sites and full hook ups. We might check out some of the campgrounds in the Lancaster area. We are also booked at Ives Run near Mansfield close to the PA Grand Canyon. As for the shore we use to like Ocean City but have found from our area that Wildwood NJ is just as nice and closer.

Like others have said, when it is done and said you are looking at not much difference in $$ whether it is $3 or $4. I can make up for that by not doing 1 activity or not going out to eat once while on vacation. Even in our motorhome which averages about 7 mpg a trip to Florida only changes by $128 in each direction. I spent that taking the kids kayaking one day.
