....how do you handle dinner ??

1- Everyone takes care of their own meals
2- Pot luck style where everyone contributes something
3- Take turns making the meals
4- Play it by ear, whatever happens, happens.

Which do you prefer and why ??

We will only camp with people we're very close to and like, so it's "go for broke" - a discussion will ensue and we decide, then do it - whatever it is. I like to cook - hate to clean, but also know that no one else will clean up my 5'er like I will, so I usually do both - with help - but I'm at the helm on both. As to another thing - sometimes we all decide to go out and that works too!

When camping with our friends, we usually rotate who cooks the main dish and the other brings a side dish and dessert.

On our 3-4 night family camp outs, we used to do all the dinners together. But too much stress. Now we do some dinners together and some dinners on our own.
We sometimes do one breakfast together too.

At our tent camping family reunions, we'd alternate cooking responsibilities - one family made breakfast, one made dinner (on own for lunch), and whoever didn't cook was involved in clean up. If for some reason someone couldn't cook (lack of stove or whatnot), they contributed $5-$10 towards the meal (depending upon how many in family were eating). We alternated ice runs also. There were two of us who enjoyed exploring the area, and we'd be the ones to go for ice or some supplies.

1,2,4 or just go out to eat. No real plan, more of wait and see what develops each day kind of deal but a significant number of meals will be shared somehow.

With 14 units in the family campout we tend to go with everyone on their own. Some nights they may all make the same thing but not everyone likes it spiced the same so they do it seperately at the same time. It usually is prepared alone but eaten together.

With our 4 couple on the Superior trip we will do the same and it may happen that a couple meals are together.

We find that not everyone even gets up at the same time for breakfast together and seldom are we all together at the same time for lunch, leaving only dinner having a possiblility for a common meal. The family group also has some seeing the sights and not always making it back in time for a meal with the ones that stayed on the grounds.

Alot of different possiblilties but seldom cooked together.

DW and I camp with another family regularly. The DW's will fix Friday nights dinner with something that they pre-cooked at home and warm up at the CG. Saturday nights dinner is always fixed by us guys. Sunday...only breakfast served, as on Saturday morning it is usually cereals for the kids and either an egg casserole or sausage/ chipped beef gravy over toast or biscuits.

The DW's will plan the weekends meals and pick up the groceries.

We have a close friend or two who are often at the same dog shows as us. Breakfast and lunch are usually on our own. Dinners are very informal. Each of us usually brings enough to feed a couple armies, and we just wing it. In the afternoon, we talk about what we have, and everybody brings a dish or two. We haven't gone hungry yet!

Before we leave for a camping trip with friends, we figure out food and who does what.

Breakfast we usually cook on our own, mostly because my son and I get up much earlier than anyone else it seems. Usually one breakfast will be "communal", which kills me because I have to wait a couple hours after getting up to eat...

Lunch is up in the air. Everyone brings lunch stuff, and the kids will be fed by whoever is available at the time, adults usually eat at their own camper. One or two lunches may be planned, but not usually.

Dinners are usually planned in advance. And we usually make more of an effort with being "fancy". It is a lot easier to be creative when you have extra people available to help out. Most all cooking is done outdoors. The Roadtrip type grills are great for this (we have a Thermos Grill-2-Go), as you can just bring it over to whichever campsite we are cooking at that night. I enjoy cooking and will very much help out, but usually I am pushed out of the way by the women-folk (they might be trying to tell me something...).

Cost-wise, we try to make sure it is fairly spread out, and reasonable. Usually the "main course" of each dinner is the responsibility of one family, and side dishes are brought by everyone else. If one family Insists on making a very expensive dinner, I pretty much refuse to "reciprocate" because we "have to". I don't like being put in that position, and try my best to not put others in that position.

We have learned over the years to be ready if meal plans fall through. If the other family doesn't get to the campground in time to make the dinner they were "responsible" for, or something else comes up, we have "backup" dinner food in the TT. Or if one family basically forgets to bring dinner, again we will have backup plans. It maybe as simple as a few cans of Hormel beef stew.
Also, if you are going to bring treats, make sure you have enough for everyone. It looks really bad when one kid walks over eating ice cream, but there is not enough for anyone else.
