It was fun reading all of your responces. I'd love to camp with you all. Here is what happened on our last vacation (5 families)
We decided to do b-fast and lunch on our own and do group dinners. All 5 of us women sat down and came up with a menu (leaving one night free to go out) and we evenly divided the meals. Sounded like a good idea...no one person was stuck with a lot of cooking, just bringing one dish.
But then we got there !!
It was obvious the first day that we were in trouble. Most of us were ready to for dinner between 6 and 7. There was one family that got a late state every morning and was just eating lunch at 3:00 and didn't want to eat dinner until about 9:00. We were sitting outside with the mosquitos by that point. Each night we tried to move them along but we would all be sitting there with our dishes made waiting for them.
Another family ended up bringing WAY more food that was planned. They would bring 2-3 sides each night and then we had too many leftovers and people weren't eating the food the rest of us had made.
It became a stressful situation as the week went on.
So this year the same group is going again and we said up front that we are going to handle dinners on our own. It's just easier...I don't have to worry about what time to be back to the campground, we can eat when we are hungry, and if we want to change our minds and go out at the last minute we don't have to check with the group.
Of course some took this as a snub and that wasn't the intention.

1- Everyone takes care of their own meals
2- Pot luck style where everyone contributes something
3- Take turns making the meals
4- Play it by ear, whatever happens, happens.
Which do you prefer and why ??
1. We usually just cook our own thing over a community fire or grill. Occasionally, we'll decide to splurge and say, do ribs - buy a whole slab and everyone pitches in for the cost. Than everyone will bring some kind of a side dish.
My husband would be out there every day cooking for all those who want him to. He is a great chef.

This sounds like a really reasonable solution. I am an early eater and don't want to wait for 9pm to eat. That's wine time.

Usually I fix breakfast for everyone because I am going to be cooking anyway. DH just has to have sausage and biscuits for breakfast orhis day is spoiled! Some of the people we camp with regularly only want coffee for breakfast, maybe a sweet roll or pop-tart. Lunches is kinda whatever. We take turns providing the main dish for dinner and everyone contributing what ever they have as sides. works out and no one goes hungry.

We've been camping with the same couple for over 20 years. We pretty much know what the other will bring, but we always try to bring a little something different each time. We always have way too much food. If they hit the grill before we do, then we do the sides for the night and vice versa unless we having something special for the entree.
The last time we camped it was only the 4 of us for 9 days (no adult children this time). I tried to kinda inventory all the leftovers each evening to see what we use a different way and empty the fridge.

We usually camp with 3-4 other couples. We have found this the easiest way for us:
Breakfast: One does the eggs, another the bacon and sausage, the other biscuits and gravy. We always have cantalope and fresh fruit we share. I usually wind up doing the biscuits too since I am the only one that doesn't burn them....or wait, do they burn them on purpose so I have to do them???
Lunch: You are on your own because it depends on when (or if) the guys come in off the lake.
Grill Night: Bring your own steak and a dish to share.
Fish Night: Bring a dish to share and hope the guys caught enough fish to feed us.
If we stay longer than the weekend, we have a big spagetti feed with garlic bread and salad. Then plan similar meals for any additional nights.

We routinely camp with 4 other families. One morning is a communal breakfast. Everyone pitches in eggs, biscuits, pancakes, etc and the guys(yes, the guys) do the cooking(except for the biscuits). The ladies and kids do the clean-up. We also always do at least one dinner together. Again the guys get to cook, usually the same kind of meat, steak or chicken on the grill, and the ladies each make a side and dessert, that way there are lots of choices. The rest of the meals are a toss up, sandwiches, burgers or dogs, eat out...etc.

We usually camp with just one other couple, no kids. Us ladies plan the menu for the entire trip, with one cooking dinner one night, the other the next night. That way we each get a break from cooking. Bkfst and lunch is on our own, even though we eat lunch together. Then we usually plan a nite or two of eating out. We usually have a back up plan already in the mh, i.e., cans of chili or soup in case it rains or someone forgot something. We do usually end up bringing too much food, but isn't that what camping is all about... lots of good food, great scenery and great friends!!

We've camped with one to three other families. We usually got together and made mini menus for dinner and then went shopping for the groceries and split the cost. Some things we cooked or prepped before leaving, we divided these things up after we shopped. Then we took turns eating at each others places with mostly the women doing the work. Then we all helped each other clean up. Some of the nights the guys did the bbq while we put together side dishes. Most of the time we were not at the camp sites for lunch so we either made picnic stuff or ate out, we usually went hiking so portable food was our only option. As for breakfast, DH likes a hearty meal while the others preferred just coffee and toast. If the kids wanted to stop by for a big breakfast they just waited until our shades were up and they could come join us.
We all also packed snacks and munchies and just shared. We always leave a night or two for going out if we were in an area that we could do that, sometimes we were at sites too far to drive to dinner.
