Our development has this restricion on it too, and we knew that going in because we read the covenants before we wrote a check. No boats on trailers, no RVs. So I have a porta-bote that folds up and stores in the garage, and the TT... well, haven't bought that yet, it'll either be in a $30/month storage or at FIL's, he has the room for it.

Where we lived before there was a guy growing trees in the 12' john boat in his front yard, among other stuff.

these rules are there to protect you but often lack commonsense and end up being run and enforced by the few busybody's in the community association that have nothing better to do with their time than be a thorn in another's side...

sometimes it's a local government that adopted a bunch of rules designed by a engineering/planner firm to the tune of hundreds of thousands of your tax dollars... due to apathy they are able to pass ridiculous rules with the support of a very few because they take the time to go to the meetings... in this case we get the government we deserve...

in neither of these cases, have they learned that just because a little of something is good, doesn't necessarily mean a lot of it is better...

but in most cases when you move in you have agreed to the rules, and must live by them... better yet get involved and change any that don't make sense...

I don't happen to think it is my neighbors business if I park my new pick-up or van (with no advertising on it) in my driveway... but some places say they must be in the garage... I think it is my business if I keep my lawn cut at 3 1/2" instead of the ruled 2"...

in some cases there needs to be a rule preventing stupid rules... and in many cases the better neighbor may be kept out by the holier than thou covenants...

I recently moved (last summer) and couldn't find anything out in the country and had to find something quickly for getting my girls in school. I bought in a sub-division and parked my trailer out front in our driveway. Many more in neighborhood also. Someone complained over a new neighbor putting in a drive for his motorhome. And we all had to move our campers in the backyard. Couldn't be in the drivway or beside the house. I have never been in a neighborhood before and now know why!! I really haven't ever heard of this before, may be a common thing. Thanks had to vent a little.

I could be wrong, but the city/county ordinances should NOT tell you how you use your property as far as personal vehicle parking goes. However, the HOA if it has the properly recorded documents can restrict things like vehicle parking which if you bought Homeowner's title insurance you would have been given a copy of. You mentioned people who had been doing something and then having to change it. That normally requires HOA membership approval, recordation of the modification and "grandfathering" for those members before the change.

Each city is different since they each make their own laws. In Topeka as long as the RV does not stick out closer to the street than the house there is no problem. IN the ACTUAL world they don't enforce RV parking regs unless someone complains. I don't think I'd want to change the regs here cause there would soon be RVs, boats and the like parked in peoples front yards all over the place and it doesn't look good.

Hi: We know of a subdivision that is just now allowing a pickup truck to be parked over night or in the driveway. For many years, they viewed the pickup truck as a service vehicle. Overnight visitors who drove a pickup had to either put it out of sight or get a special permit from the PD. Some places are very tough on this. Bill

Bill that is why so many people hate Covenants and or HOA. Here in Perrysburg you can not have a RV or Boat stored in your driveway or side yard from October 31 thru April 1.

Lou the builder screwed us when he built our home, we have a full front porch but it is not opened underneath so the poor puppies freeze in the winter.

Man, ain't that the truth. Our self appointed "Queen Bee" actually drives around our large association taking notes and reporting every infraction to the HOA. My neighbors have some incredible horror stories about dealing with these knuckleheads.

I've received letters a couple of times about my TT parked out front for a few days. I just ignored them and nothing ever came of it. Others in my neighborhood have responded to similar letters and got into big p**sing matches with the HOA. I think there's some weenie in a cubicle somewhere who's job depends on homeowners responding to the letters. So if a homeowner gets a letter and doesn't respond, then the weenie just moves on to the homeowners who do respond. Gotta justify his job, I bet.

On the flip side, our community is very nice and will continue to be for a long time to come. Plus, our cul-de-sac is great. We all get along well. Lotsa kids that play together. All the guys drink beer together on the weekends. Summer BBQ's. You get the idea. So I guess it's a good trade-off.

One of these days you're gonna have to make a trip out west, John. I'd like to pull a cork with ya. We can sit around the fire, drink beer and tell a bunch of lies.

If you don't like rules don't BUY into them. There's plenty of "Blue Tarp" America for all you yard trash people.
