We've towed in and out of Canada many times. Never been hassled once, either direction. Bet the odds of being hassled are very small. IMO all border folks we've met seemed nice folks.

Yep, that was exactly the attitude that I got in Toronto. I flew into Calgary several times and never had a problem. I'm cheery and pleasant, answer questions directly and confidently with good eye contact - all of the things that are supposed to help me get through. I got into such a fight one night with one agent that I told her I was tired of the hassle and that she had to very good choices - let me in or deport me. I would be fine with either and just hoped that she would get about making her decision. She stamped my PP and continued to lecture me as I walked away and wished her a very good evening.
I do hope that coming in with the RV will be easier. It would just be my luck that the same agent would be on where I cross.

That's for the initial passport, which may have been issued prior to 2001. Since then all the states and provinces have compiled a list of known offenders and that has gone into a massive database.
As an example, a crewman replacement, was denied a renewal of his US passport because he committed a "crime" in between. His "crime" was a suspended drivers license and unpaid license plates in 2004. Yet two weeks ago, Homeland Security issued him a TWIC which requires a background check and is required to enter any and all US ports. Go figure!

lzasitko I had a similar situation traveling to canada for consulting work. the first dozen times I got thru with no problem. the last time, which was a number of years back prior to 9-11, I had to pay the $50 I think it was at that time and got the paper stapled in my passport book. Of course this $50 was billed to and paid for by the canadian company so I don't really know what Canada gained by this.

No. These are good reasons not to drink or get high.
I don't know how many times I have crossed at various customs' entries. From BC to NB over 40+ years, it is safe to "a lot."
Only once we ran into a customs official who was, shall we say a d*ck. Oddly, he was most interested in a bottle of virgin olive oil I'd brought for a friend and demanded to know its "true value." I laughed.
But hey this guy was just a miserable jerk with nothing better to do at 2am than act officious.

I have traveled into canada with a person who has a felony conviction from 1987 twice in the last 3 years and once we even had bear spray and didn't even have a passports just birth certificates and had no problems or questions regarding said conviction. It sounds like we were lucky. I do know that when driving across we could tell that they knew exactly who we were before we got to talk to the guard. We claimed the bear spray when asked and were completely honest.

As usual you always hear the bad side. Consider the thousands of crossings done both ways each day with no problem. It doesn't matter where you go, show up with something to hide or an attitude and you will probably have a problem. We personally have had no problems, as a matter of fact, I have had more questions asked of me going through an agricultural stop in California. I have lots of friends how go south regularly and have been searched on a regular basis and they just right it off as part of the travel experience. Come on up, we will be glad to have you visit.

The thing is no one is going to be able to tell you whether you will be able to get in without a problem because it will depend on the boarder guard you get. Just tell the truth cause if they catch you in a lie you will have a hell of a time getting into Canada again.

Not true at all. CBSA doesn't run a lottery. Their agents all have a standard question progrssion set that they use to find the facts in each case. The answers they receive will decide the direction of the questions that follow.
Once again, any US citizen who has concerns about their ability to enter Canada legally should CALL the border point that they intend use to enter Canada, and ASK for clarification about their individual situation. Trying to sneak in will only result in grief, all around.

Not necessarily. Things may have changed but I've entered Canada (driving) 3 times and even though I have a DUI in my far past (35+ years ago) and my wife's DUI is more recent I didn't have a problem. Just: where you going, how long you gonna stay, do you have any guns.
