MudChucker I was being a smart a@@ regarding your post. But it does prove a point that we all could appear to be uneducated but that in of itself has no bearing on a person's honesty, integrity, or criminal record. To assume otherwise is a grave error. However, the other two parts are actually not valid. "looking like a criminal", and "looking like your up to something" is not used in any LEO functions. I know I retired from LEO after over 27 years service. Now, if answers to questions don't make sense, passengers in same vehicle give different accounts to the same question, individual hesitates before answering, does not look in eye when answering, and the list goes on and on, then those are great clues to investigate further. And criminals look like everyone else; you can't tell by looking, believe me.

"you look like a criminal", and "you look like your up to something" were and still are familiar sayings within our family as far back as my GM who was born in 1883 .............. But we know they have no bearing on reality and what the person is doing or going to do.

wayne_tw and grinder,
while a little off topic, it is a lesson learned...
when I commented on looking like your up to something I think of the movies (yes I know, "the movies") and the terrorist on the jet with a bomb strapped to his chest...dripping with nervousness, jittery... you know what Im saying...
at the end of the day, to simply answer the original question, I think as its a privilege to cross boarders into other countries anyone could be refused access for any reason, pardon, waiver or otherwise. Your having a criminal record (as do I) simply equates to greater odds of entry into a foreign country being denied.
I view the gamble differently then most, I live an hour from the border so if Im denied entry its not a huge loss... I suppose this begs the question, if Im denied entry today, when am I able to go back through ?

Go for it, just say no if ask. Remove your sun glasses an if yu have long hair put it under your hat. If you got a beard trim it up nice. Keep a pleasent smile on you face (not the mean look). And don't try to make conversation just yes and no's. That is not enough crime to even call a crime. See ya up there.

Lets face it since 911 all borders are more strict. But if you have a pass port, no firearms of any kind including peperspray etc. You are not a convicted felon (jail time type) You should have no problem. I hear stories all the time and I cross the border 2-3 times a week. and never had a problem.
Just a few things you are not allowed
guns of anykind
pepper spray of any kind
fire wood
some fruits and Veggies

And enough solar power so I never have to start the Genni

United States, Canada and several other countries will not allow you entry if you have been convicted of a crime. The US does not recognize another country's pardon. I'm not sure about Canada. If you are in doubt, contact the embassy and get verification. Most countries will issue a wavier if it is a one of and you've been good, but waivers take time.
Canada's border agents are not as skiddish as the US agents right now. Just don't get stupid. Leave the hand gun at home and answer the questions honestly. Passports help but mostly needed to get back into the US.

That's absolutely correct, you Americans don't want to visit us up-tight Canucks. You just have to LOOK guilty and our border bretheren will toss you and your family in the klinker and confiscate your RV!
STAY AWAY!
(It's hard enough to get a decent campsite as it is!)

I have had problems getting into the states. Similar to you I worked at that time for a mining company that had an office in the US. I was to go down and set up a computer network in our office there. I flew to Calgary and had a connecting flight to the US. Going through US customs I got some women that had a problem with my working in the US. I was told I needed all the paperwork filled out (Illegal Alien working in the US, yes there are forms for that) and pay a fee in cash. Problem was that I had to have the original documents filled out and signed in ink, they would not accept faxes. If they would of accepted faxes I could have probably had it all done in an hour. In the end my home office said to fly back home, which I did. We got all the papers done and signed etc and had the fee. Flew back to Calgary and went through. I told the gentlemen at the border that this is my second try and gave him the papers. He just sighed and said something about some of the people at the border thinking they are god or something. Anyways he asked what I was going to do and said have a nice flight. Did not have to pay the fee or anything. Just cost the company the changes to the flights and a flight home with no notice etc.
But getting back to the topic. My daughters boyfriend and some buddies decided to go south for a stag. They got as far as the US border and got stopped. Not sure why but they searched the car and claimed they found traces of weed in the ashtray. They were arrested on the spot and car was towed. Turns out that my daughter boyfriend had a drug possession charge way back in the 70's. He claimed that it must have been one of his buddies that had the weed but he was in jail there for almost a week before he was sent back to Canada. He lost his Jaguar on the spot and it was going to auctioned off. He landed up having to go back down for court and had a fine and lawyer fees to deal with and in the end was at least 10k. He was told not to try going to the states again.... Pretty expensive trip for him.
That said, I think it might be iffy getting into Canada though a misdemeanor should not matter, depends on if you get a stickler at the border or not.
