It may not be PC to profile but it works and that is what they do at the border. If you fit into the blue-hair-bulgemobile profile then you are a lot less likely to get the 3rd degree. We've been snowbirding for over 15 years now. When we started we were just plain too young and it made them suspicious. Now that there's more grey on top they worry less about us. You also risk running into the "short man syndrome" if you are above average height. Not much you can do about that except "yessir, nosir, whatever you saysir"

While I agree with what you're saying in theory, there are all kinds of grey areas regarding criminal record searches. I once was denied access to the USA and was allowed in when I tried again with a different guard - I was honest that I'd been denied BUT since I'd paid for reservations and had no where to go but home I thought I'd have another go at it.... and I was allowed in the second time.

TomW2 and others..as long as the names aren't run thru the computer, then chances are good that the vehicle is allowed in. However, if, for any reason names of people in the vehicle ARE run...and there is a person with a record of a Criminal Conviction...the gate just just closed shut for that person. The others can be cleared but the one with the record will be denied.
Just thinking aloud here...but imagine an RV with a couple aboard, one of whom has a Conviction for a Criminal Offense, are passed thru into Canada, drive to and into Alaska...do the holiday..and are stopped at the US/Cdn (Alaska and BC) border heading south. Man-oh-man..what a reality check THAT would be, eh?

Don't think you'll be turned back for swearing at someone as long as you don't do it to the BG, but once you hit a Canadian gas station you'll probably turn back anyway.

We went to pick up our niece at Vancouver Airport last week arriving on a flight from LA for an 8 day visit. 2 hours after her flight arrived and no sign of her. No one at the airport could help me -- said she most likely is undergoing secondary custom inspection and they could not enter the area to check for us. I left messages on her cell phone but no response. Finally 3 hours after her flight arrived and we did not know what to do, my cell rang. Lady from Canadian Customs told me my niece would not be allowed to enter Canada today. I asked her what that meant and why not but she said she could not give me details. People being held by Customs cannot use their cell phones. Told us to go home as nothing we could do for her at the airport and she would be placed back on a flight later that evening to LA. Indeed late that evening she finally phoned me from LA -- problem was she had a DUI ticket last year in California which meant she now had a "criminal record" and was told by Canadian officials Canada now consider her a criminal and she could not enter until this was taken off her record. And she was told had there not been a return flight that evening to LA, she may have been escorted to jail for the evening until a flight was available in the morning as customs at the airport to do not have the capacity to observe her all evening. Apparently there is a website she can go to where she can download the form to apply to have this removed from her record and process will take about 6 months -- do not have the details about this yet. And she told me that others were in the same position as her that day.

Your niece is now RED FLAG by the Canadian Gov't and will have to apply for a wavier a pardon won't work. A pardon will only work if it is done before the country you are entering finds out you have a record, once they find out only a wavier will work.
And don't ask how I know that.
