First, it depends what your tow vehicle's manufacturer recommends. Check your owner's manual. We found our tranny "hunts" too much when we're in cruise control, since even interstates aren't entirely flat due to underpasses, etc. I'll use it for brief periods to rest my leg, if it's not too windy or hilly where we're driving.

Never on rainy/slick roads. Only with light traffic on level two-lane roads. Usually not on hilly terrain. These are my "rules" based on personal experience (and some hairy moments) towing a TT and 5th wheel.

Typically I don't like to use it on my truck while towing in OD because the cruise control on GM vehicles is very aggressive. The slightest drop in speed (say from 62MPH to 58MPH) will cause it to shift from 4th down to 2nd gear and then back to 4th when the set speed is regained. I'd much prefer that it first drop into 3rd and gradually get back up to speed, but I guess GM thought driver's wanted to get there in a hurry. There's no mechanical harm with this aggressive downshift, but it sure wakes you up when the truck goes from 2200RPM to 4200RPM instantly.

If I'm in mildly hilly terrain on the interstate I can put it 3rd with cruise and it will usually hold that gear just fine.

I use it. But I also run with tow/haul on and in 3rd gear. But that is my set up.

I use it all the time on the interstate and good roads, never in heavy traffic. With diesel running over $4.00 per gallon we have dropped down to 60 MPH on the interstate and run the speed limit on 2 lane.

I wonder about the safety of running at 60 when it's posted at 75, I see that many truck are slowing down, but cars for the most part or running still over the posted.

I used it on my PSD Excursion when pulling TT and I use it on my MH. Just use a little common sense and you'll be fine.
