We will be driving from Central Texas to Hill City South Dakota in June, pulling a 34' 5er. Need to know the best and least stressful route. Heard bad things about US 385 through Colorado. Any suggestions?

we like to take 83 north out of Abilene up to North Platte NE and then west on I-80 to Sidney NE and north on 385.
We like staying overnight at Canadian TX... they have a nice little city park on the north side of town just before the bridge.
In North Platte, we stay at the Flying J... you have to turn east on I-80 for a couple miles.
Sidney has a very nice rv park at Cabela's.
7 miles south of Chadron NE is Chadron State Park, a very nice state park with elec hookups.

I'll ditto the US 83 route.

Yes, it is mostly two lane, but good shape, and wide.

North Platte also has Holiday Park RV park just to the east of where US 83 meets with I-80. Good place for an overnight stop, good facilities for washing clothes.

Fuel stops in North Platte, Thedford, Valentine Nebraska. Murdo South Dakota, where US 83 meets I-90.

Further south, you cannot miss several good truck stops. Believe one just north of Liberal, Kansas and another at Garden City, Kansas. Easy access with big fifth wheel.

Also a fine little county run RV park right on US 83 where US 83 crosses the Salt Fork of the Red River up in the Texas panhandle. Great for an overnight stay. It will be north of Wellington, Texas.

Others have said it as well I could. You can't beat US83.

I am also going to hill City area the first week in June and I am planning on useing US 87 out of Amarillo going through New Mexico, and getting on I25 north out of Raton NM. I have driven the route many times in a car but this time I am a proud owner of a 5er and Dodge 2500 TV.

There are sites to see on the way and it is a good road all of the way. As for ease of the drive the only close to real Mountain pass I have to go over is Raton Pass and it is not bad to me. Now, this is going to be my first time I will going on a long trip and I may have a lot of preconcived misconceptions but it should be a great adventure. Shoot that is what RVing is all about. If we meet on the same road at the same time we could travel together and share our experences. If not we may very well see each other at Hill City.

Have a safe trip.
