So we made our first outing of the year last week. It was a success and fun time had by all. No problems with the trailer EXCEPT, upon opening the fridge for the first time in six months, I find a plastic bag of green liquified stuff. The sticker on the bag told me that in Sept 2007 the bag contained deli roast beef. After a thorough cleaning with lemon lysol cleaner, vinegar, and two open boxes of baking soda, the thing still REEKS.

Any ideas on getting the smell out of the fridge? If no luck, I may just have to trade the thing(not really).

I've seen many times, people mention coffee grounds. I don't know if they are talking about new or used grounds and placing them in the fridge. Good Luck

We forgot to switch our fridge from propane to electric after returning one trip. Ran out of propane and same thing, worse smell ever. Tried everything (electric Charcoal filter, just charcoal, newspapers daily, baking soda, you name it we tried it for weeks) We thought we were going to have to replace the fridge.

Finally, We took freshly ground coffee and put about a pound in the freezer and the fridge part. Left the door shut for 1 week. DO NOT PEEK. Then we repeated it.

You will need to really clean the door seals. I used clorox. The smell gets into those seals.

After 2 weeks, smell is gone and has never come back.

There are a number of things that can help, here are a few.

crumpled up newspaper stuffed in it. change daily until the smell is goine,
fresh coffee grounds (this could get expensive)
a small dish or two of ammonia sitting inside the closed fridge for a couple of days,
charcoal, like the kind for an fish tank filter (can't spell the correct word),
wash with a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and ammonia, then leave a dish sit in the fridge.

Also if you do a search, I know you will find tons of info, this seems to happened to folks periodically. Keeping our fingers crossed it doesn't happen to us.

Good luck, safe travels,

I'll second the ammonia. A dish left in there for a day or two will take most smells away and there is no lingering ammonia smell.

In addition to letting charcoal sit in there.....I have ready that wiping down interior with vanilla extract will take out odor. Have not tried it but at least the smell is pleasant. Good luck!

I've always had a friend in bleach....for fridges, bait freezers and fish coolers. The baking soda thing is a myth, by the way:

This is a very clever and successful marketing ploy by the baking soda people, but the fact is that baking soda is very poor at absorbing odors. It seems to make sense, however, so lots of people have spent untold billions of dollars to put boxes of baking soda in their fridge or freezer to no effect. Activated charcoal would work much better but is expensive. Better to wrap your food and clean the fridge once in a while.

Febreeze maybe. Left some fish in a freezer and unplugged it. Yikes, the smell about killed ya! I bought some odor neutralizing Arm & Hammer spray and sprayed it in everytime I walked by, which was often. It worked.

I Took our TT to the farm and on the way i bought a huge bag of fresh peaches, yep you guessed it.....I left the bag in the TT and three weeks later i had floating pits in a bag of goo. Good thing the bag held up and the lingering odor was cured with coffee and arm & hammer baking soda.

If you left the fridge closed when turned off it may be more than just the roast beef you're smelling.
