I just got back from a short trip (400) miles and when I checked my coolant today there was less than 1/3 in the reservoir. Before I left to go on the trip, I had topped it off, because it was almost empty, so I know that it was full when I left. Any thoughts on why this could be?

Check the hose clamps they have been famous for rusting through and leaking under pressure replace with the worm type in SS.

You are not supposed to "top off", there should be marks for "cold" and "hot".

If you fill it up, then it blows out the overflow pipe and when it cools it will be down considerably

If it is 1/3 full, the radiator is full.

It could also have a crack in the resevoir, like mine does. It will only leak when pressure is built up, makes it hard to find the leak.

Yes, what I should have said was, I filled it up to the fill level. " Top off" does sound like I filled it up to the Cap.

Now that we know that all of the mfgr recommendations are not quite gospel, my heart also goes out to all the diesel pusher owners who fill with oil to the top mark and then panic when then the level has gone down to the minimum after only a few hundred miles, assuming major engine problems when those rigs are designed to blow by any escess.

I would check your radiator cap 1st, with the engine cold. Check the rubber seal really good. Good luck.

On my 2002 V-10, the level stays at about an inch above the bottom of the overflow tank. Over the years I have filled to the cold full level and after a trip it was back down to the inch mark. When the engine is hot it will rise to about 2 inches. Been like this for years and never ran hot. If anyone finds anything different, please let us know.
