The first MH we had I didn't use anything the first winter we stored it. The next spring mice had made a mess of things. They even eat some wiring wrap and it took us several months to get everything up and running. We've been using dryer sheets and moth balls every fall for a number of years. Like other we take them out, air the rig out and we've not had any problems or ill effects.

One thing I do, is keep the old dryer sheets and use them to remove bugs from the front of our new fiver and pick-up--they work great.

I have also used moth balls and drier sheets for winter storage. Works great and find no signs of mice. I take old vitamin bottles, drill a bunch of 3/8" holes in them, fill them with moth balls, srew the cap on and set them in all the lower compartments. works great and just go around the coach in the spring and collect all the bottles til next year.

We never had too much luck with them keeping the mice out, but they work GREAT keeping the mud wasps and spiders from building in and around those appliances that use gas jets. About 5-6 in a small plastic cup placed in the fridge, water heater, and gas heater compartments keep the critters from trying to set up housekeeping. I don't even bother to remove them when we use the rig. No smell at all inside.

The thing that you should remember is that moth balls are very potent and a little can go a long way, you're talking about a solid pesticide here. Most people will hang a bag full of mothballs in the closet, when in truth 2-3 can take care of a 12-15' long standard closet.

The owner of the coach has put mothballs and dryer sheets in the RV to keep the mice out. My question is will this leave a long term mothball smell in the coach?

Are there any risks - I have two young boys and are the mothballs poisonous?

Should I have all the carpets/upholstery steam cleaned?

Thanks!

Use a mouse trap for the mice and leave the moth balls in the store – I don’t like the small and we never use them.

I use moth balls on the ground under the RV; dryer vents in the coach and in the storage compartments; a couple of sticky traps in the storage compartments too; and bait poison placed on the stairs inside the MotorHome (that way I can tell right away if I have a problem or not - they usually leave a mess on the stairs which I can easily sweep away).

A long time ago I placed the moth balls in the storage areas. After a long winters storage it took months to get rid of the smell, which I couldn't stand.

This procedure works well for me during the last few years and the one time I was in a hurry putting the RV away and didn't use it, I was greeted by mice droppings when I went to prepare for our next trip.

Good luck, R1chy

I reported back in Dec. about rats in the gen. compartment; nest and chewed wiring. Use both mothballs and dryer sheets. Did the job!
