I just took the truck to the car wash to clean it up. It was a great day for a change 70 degrees outside. I pulled in and paid for the works including under carriage. I pulled out and drove about 3 miles to work. I could smell burnt oil or gear oil. I checked the wheels and under the hood, no oil leaks. I drove home and got out of the truck. I could see smoke coming from the right rear wheel. I looked under the truck and the axle seal is leaking.

Looks like I'll be pulling the axle out of the truck tomorrow. I go on vacation in a week and a half. I guess I'm lucky it didn't go when I was towing my 5th wheel!

According to the dealer that fixed my axle seal, its pretty common on the early 2500HDs.

The seal on my '01 went out at about 21-22k.

Dodge put the fill plug really low on their 11.5 AAM and I think fresh oil rarely gets to the wheel brgs/seals so I put 5 qts in mine. Craig

Hate to ask this for fear of the flames, but do you know how heavy you are?
According to my brochure that trailer should have a GVWR of right at13,800 pounds, and that will translate into a pin weight of 2900 pounds. If that is anywhere true, that is way too much for a 2500HD and it is possible that your problems are just beginning.

The rear axle on the 2500HD is rated by GM at about 1/2 the actual capacity that AAM rates it for.

AAM has it rated at almost 11,000lbs.

There has been some reports that synthetic and silicone seals don't
mix and leak or failure after a few thousand miles.

Wonder if they used a silicone based gasket treatment?
