Are you sure that the hole you are looking at is a 12V-dc power outlet?

Yes, It says 12 volts 8 amps. If I can't find an adapter I will change the plate and rewire for one that fits.

...Next to to the 110 outlet there is a cable plate with a big hole in the middle that looks like a 12 volt outlet. The cord that came with TV does not fit into the hole. What is the 12 volt outlet for and how do I use it to power the TV on batery? Thanks,

First - do you have a television that is 110V and 12 V capable?
If not - go get a small inverter. You can get them at almost any auto parts store.

But it sounds like you do have a television that is 110V and 12 V capable and it should have come with two cords - one which has 2 or 3 prongs and goes into the 110VAC outlet and a second one that has a cylindrical jack, which has a metal tip and one or two contacts on the side - also known as a "cigarette lighter jack"

If the cigarette lighter jack will not go into the "cable plate with a big hole", you have run into a rather common problem. There are two different sized 12V cigarette lighter plugs, the difference in size is 0.5 mm. (For size details see here) I have had this problem myself.

You have five ways to resolve this. DISCLAIMER: Incorrectly wiring your 12V system could result in damage to the television, your trailer, fire, death, or worse - a ruined camping trip.

1. Replace the plate with a plate that has the correct size plug in this. I have NO idea where you would find this plate. DISCLAIMER: Do not do this if you are not familiar with the proper way to wire 12V systems as incorrectly wiring could result in fire and or damage to trailer or television.
2. Go to an electronics or auto parts store and buy a replacement jack of the correct size for the television. Cut off the end of the 12V cord of the television and put the replacement on. DISCLAIMER: Do not do this if you are not familiar with the proper way to wire 12V appliances or if you do not want to void the warranty on the television
3. Remove the plate from the wall of the trailer and drill out the current connector. Replace it with a correct size connector that you got from an auto parts store. DISCLAIMER: Do not do this if you are not familiar with the proper way to wire 12V appliances or if you do not want to void the warranty on the trailer
4. Build an adapter that consists of a male jack of the correct size that will fit into the plate in your trailer and a female plug of the correct size that will fit the television. You may be able to find an electronics repair shop that can make this for you. DISCLAIMER: Incorrectly wiring this adapter can result in destroying the television or trailer.
5. (Safest option) This is a variation of option 1. Take the trailer to a authorized repair center and have them replace the plate. Then if it is wired wrong, it is their fault and they have to fix it. (although they should know what they are doing)
portscanner, you forgot the MOST IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER, "If any of this causes fire or damage to the TV, trailer, or any componant thereof,or personal injury to any or all inhabitants of said trailer, I was never here, and never told you anything."

OK, now you made me go look, because I was thinking of plugging in an inverter there, so I would'nt have to hard wire it.
What will that 8 amp plug run?
Why is it there, if you can't plug anything into it?
I think there would be more to it than just replacing the wall plate with the socket, if 8 Amp isn't enough, wouldn't you have to rewire it with heavier wire?

Thanks for all the help I bought an adapter and made it fit in the socket so that part works fine. I did not have a cord for the TV to use 12 volts so I bought a 100 watt inverter which also works great. So now I can plug in the inverter and use the TV and also have another 12 volt plug for something else. The 8 amps and 12 volts means the plug is rated for 96 watts which is why I bought the 100 watt inverter. Thanks again for everyone's help. Hopefully I can soon start to help people on the website.

Glad you got your problem figured out, it doesn't help mine much though,my TV is a 27 inch color, so i'm sure it requires in excess of 150 watts.
Guess I'll have to have the inverter hardwired, which is what I didn't want to do.

You didn't say, what size tv you have, & how many amps it draws?

The TV is only a 15" I don't know what the draw is but it works fine with the 100 watt inverter. So I'm happy!

I'd like to try it, but that 8 Amp outlet bothers me with a 400watt inverter running my 27" TV, if it even would.

I was just talking about 12 volt tv's in another thread here.
http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/20771943/srt/pa/pging/1/page/3.cfm

I would be careful about wiring up a new plate and overloading it. Chances are that the socket fits the plug of the original tv so they might limit what gets hooked up there. Maybe a dealer approved tv. If you intend to hook up anything over 8 amps make sure to check the wire size (gauge) leading to that outlet from your fuse panel.

In my experience and research with 12 volt tv's is that they only draw about 5 amps or 60 watts of dc power. That's not a lot. I eneded up with a pretty sweet set up and it draws next to nothing. I think I saw another here who had the same cupboard door mounting idea as me.

I knoced out the center of my swinging cupboard door and replaced it with my flat panel tv. It's pretty sweet.
