We wanted to run the TV on battery, right now it just plugs into a 110 outlet. Next to to the 110 outlet there is a cable plate with a big hole in the middle that looks like a 12 volt outlet. The cord that came with TV does not fit into the hole. What is the 12 volt outlet for and how do I use it to power the TV on batery? Thanks,

You would need a 12 volt to 120 volt converter that hooks up to your battery or buy a tv that works on 12 volts.

My experience is that the 12 volt socket behind the TV is not a standard power receptacle for some reason. A regular 12 volt male plug will fit but it is very tight. I use a three into one adapter in the socket and just leave it there. That way I can plug in the TV, VCP, and DVD.

First - do you have a television that is 110V and 12 V capable?
If not - go get a small inverter. You can get them at almost any auto parts store.

But it sounds like you do have a television that is 110V and 12 V capable and it should have come with two cords - one which has 2 or 3 prongs and goes into the 110VAC outlet and a second one that has a cylindrical jack, which has a metal tip and one or two contacts on the side - also known as a "cigarette lighter jack"

If the cigarette lighter jack will not go into the "cable plate with a big hole", you have run into a rather common problem. There are two different sized 12V cigarette lighter plugs, the difference in size is 0.5 mm. (For size details see here) I have had this problem myself.

You have five ways to resolve this. DISCLAIMER: Incorrectly wiring your 12V system could result in damage to the television, your trailer, fire, death, or worse - a ruined camping trip.

1. Replace the plate with a plate that has the correct size plug in this. I have NO idea where you would find this plate. DISCLAIMER: Do not do this if you are not familiar with the proper way to wire 12V systems as incorrectly wiring could result in fire and or damage to trailer or television.
2. Go to an electronics or auto parts store and buy a replacement jack of the correct size for the television. Cut off the end of the 12V cord of the television and put the replacement on. DISCLAIMER: Do not do this if you are not familiar with the proper way to wire 12V appliances or if you do not want to void the warranty on the television
3. Remove the plate from the wall of the trailer and drill out the current connector. Replace it with a correct size connector that you got from an auto parts store. DISCLAIMER: Do not do this if you are not familiar with the proper way to wire 12V appliances or if you do not want to void the warranty on the trailer
4. Build an adapter that consists of a male jack of the correct size that will fit into the plate in your trailer and a female plug of the correct size that will fit the television. You may be able to find an electronics repair shop that can make this for you. DISCLAIMER: Incorrectly wiring this adapter can result in destroying the television or trailer.
5. (Safest option) This is a variation of option 1. Take the trailer to a authorized repair center and have them replace the plate. Then if it is wired wrong, it is their fault and they have to fix it. (although they should know what they are doing)

If the TV is a 12 volt and that "Big Hole" is a 12 volt outlet (Shine a light into it and see) Then the plug may or may not fit, I have found that plugs, and outlets both come in at least 3 sizes, Small/Medium/Large and a large will not go into a small and a small will fall out of a large,, This is quality control by the way, and not very good quality control, They are supposed to be all mediums.

Just purchase a cheap MSW INVERTER (not a converter) and use that between the TV and the 12 volt outlet. We used our 120 volt TV that way for years in previous trailers. good luck / Skip

Yes, the TV is set up for 110 or 12 volt with two different cords. The problem is the 12 volt cord does not fit into the 12 volt outlet in the wall. If I buy a small inverter will I still have the same problem with the outlet?

I put in an inverter. If all you want to do is run 110 V AC stuff like your tv or DVD player, I might consider removing the receptacle and wiring an inverter directly to the wires that connect to it.

I found a 400W inverter at Costco for $20- and wired it into my TT's converter. You might be able to just use the wires that are already there for the socket.

For more details see this thread in Mods and Accessories.

My 12v wall plug had a voltage drop and wouldn't run the inverter. Luckily it was rather close to the battery compartment so I ran the proper wire and fuse and put a plug of the right size in. Now there is plenty of power to run the inverter. Radio Shack for the proper size wire and fuse, Kragen Auto for the cigarette lighter female plug and Costco for the inverter.

Then you have the problem that I outlined above - the wrong size jack/plug. An inverter could possibly have the same problem (plus that is one more piece of equipment you have to deal with.) See if you can contact the manufacturer of the trailer and see if they can help you with a new plate.
