Ok I am reading about dewinterizing the rv and see how to clean the tanks with bleach solution. What would we do with our holding tanks? We have never hauled water in them always used city water hookups, shouls we still fill the holding tank with bleach/water solution and then pump that solution through the lines and then do it again a few more times with just plain water and pump it through the lines as well?

Yes, thats what I would do. Also, after I de-winterize I drain a glass full of water directly out of the fresh water tank and look for any floaters.

You should pump the treated water through the lines and let it set for several hours. It takes time for the chlorine to kill all the critters. don't over so the bleach or you will be forever flushing it out. If I remember correctly it is about 1/4 cup for 40 gallons of water.

Always flush and sanitize your freshwater tank. You never know when you'll need it!

Good advice about sanitizing the fresh water tank but holding tanks do not need to be sanitized. Waste water doesn't CARE if they're sanitized or not Good luck / skip

I've been using the bleach method for a while now with no problems. I don't drink the water from the tank though but the kids take baths and since they're little the water ultimately ends up in the mouth at some time.
I started using this stuff though Thetford Fresh Water Tank Sanitizer and after reading how it's done I actually feel a little safer should I actually have to drink the water at some point. I don't feel that after sitting all winter that bleach alone is sufficient enough to kill everything. Probably is if you're a full timer or use your trailer more often. Sorta like a swimming pool that sits all winter long. Sometimes you have to throw in an extra dose of chemicals to really clean the water up for summer (they call it shocking a pool) then once that's done then you can use the chlorine (bleach) to maintain the tanks.
Just my .02 cents.

Your fresh water tank should be sanitized along with the complete water system at least once each year. It is both for health reasons and to prevent any growth of algae. We have been full-time now for 8 years and we drink the water from our system every day. With proper care it is no different than using tap water at home.
You can find detailed instructions on how to sanitize by going here.
