Jay, Just a word of advice, you can get a national park pass and if you do a couple it saves you quite a bit. I was on a tour there but someone told me about it. It can be purchased at any of the park entries.

Thanks for the tip, my wife is fully disabled so she has the National parks pass for the disabled which is free and is good for all the National Parks.

Jay been fallowing your progress and have enjoyed every minute. We did the northern route. Hwy. 2 from Washington to Bar Harbor Maine last summer. I saw early on in the first posts that you want to take Hwy. 1 in California. You might want to check road conditions, do to a real bad wildland fires. Right now the road is closed to all traffic. Big Sur has been evacuated. They hope to have the fire under control by the end of July. I would think the road would be open sooner. Just a heads up for you.

We made it to the Grand Canyon on Tuesday and spend four great days touring the southern rim. Last night we had a very nice dinner at the Tobar lodge, with a great table next to the window overlooking the Canyon, got to watch a beautiful sunset andenjoy a great meal.
We left the Canyon this morning at 9am and heading up to Vegas, via old RT66 from Seilug to Kingman, with a stop at the Super Walmart to restock. We then headed up to the Hoover Dam and onto Las Vegas. We arrived at Circus Circus KOA at 6pm, a quick set up and then a quick ride down the strip to see all the lights. I'm not too fond of this place and I'e only been here about 6 hours! Well this is what my wife wanted so I guess four days of this paved palace of lights is a good trade off for two weeks at National parks. So we're here til the 8th, then it's off to San Diego.

I hope I can get to Oceano Dunes, I have reservations for 7/17? If not these wild fires are certainly going to put a major cramp in our plans!
After a uneventful trip across the Death Valley we have arrived at the San Diego KOA, by far the nicest KOA I have visited. The temps are in the low 70's, perfect kinda weather for me! I don't miss the 110 degree temps that Vegas had to offer!
Tomorrow we'll take in some of the sights , since it is our first time in California and have three days here we'll be wanting to check out the Pacific Ocean first! Just want to walk on the beach and be able to say I stuck my big toe in the Pacific Ocean, lol. I'm sure they'll be a day at the zoo, and of course a day of shopping for the girls and who knows we may want to explore more of SD, before heading up the coast.

We had three wonderful days in the San Diego area the KOA in Chula Vista is a beautiful park,highly recommend it to anyone staying in the area.
We were fortunate to have a personal tour guide of the area, ( friend of the bride & groom)who was kind enough to take us to Coronado Island,we spent the morning at the Grand Hotel Coronado enjoying the beach and the Pacific ocean for the first time in our lives. The water was a beautiful turquoise and very warm as compared to the Atlantic. We also visited the USS Midway, Old Town, La Jolla, Little Italy and the beautiful Balboa Park. On the last day we took a quick ride down to the Mexican Border and scoped out Tijuana from the US Side ( no passports). We also had to take care of a few necessary things like, laundry, food shopping, refueling and have the hitch serviced (defective equalizer sway bar pockets)which was done in less than an hour.
We spent a day traveling from San Diego to LA, visiting San Clemente ( home of the Nixon summer white house) Long Beach, Hunnington Beach, Newport beach, Venice Beach ( wow a little bit of a throw back) , Santa Monica and Malibu stopping along the way to see points of interest,mostly the spectacular views of the Pacific coast.
We have been spending the last two days in Malibu at the Malibu RV Resort and Campground and have two more days here enjoying more spectacular views of the Pacific. Today and tomorrow we are heading into LA to see Universal Studios, Kodak theater, Rodeo Drive, Griffith Park, Beverly Hills , Mullholland Drive, and possiblely visit a relative for a brief time.
Tuesday we will be departing from Malibu and will continue up the coast to the Pismo Beach area , we have reservations at Oceano Dunes SP where will be camping right on the beach. So the generator will be getting some exercise for the first time on our trip and water management will be back into play for the four days on the beach.
So far things have been pretty much on schedule with no challenges or major issues, unusual for us but that's ok! Although we have not seen everything we had hoped to but what we have seen we enjoyed, even Vegas, lol.

I've been there over years ago, did they ever finish Crazy Horse?? The muir woods in San Francisco area, over the Golden gate and North is nice - where Ewok adventure was filmed.
Keep traveling, P.S. Hearst Castle tours are great if you like that stuff.

Looks like you guys are enjoying yourselves! We have friends who live on Coronado and we went to the "Del" a couple of years ago when we were out there visiting them.
We also were at El Tovar - different trip - and that is quite a view of the canyon.
Hope your travels stay as great as they have been! Although, the Pacific cannot hold a candle to down the shore. Or however you people say it.
