Sales of gasoline were down for the 4th quarter, but profits are significantly up. But, nope, we aren't being taken advantage of...
If you were to look inside of the numbers you would see that of the 11.66 billion dollars only 2.27 billion were from the refinery downstream. The refinery downstream is gasoline. The rest of their profit was in other areas that have nothing to do with the fuel we use to drive our motor homes. Only 19.4% of their profit comes from gasoline. Are oil companies good investments, yes. $2.13 per share for Exxon is good for the retirement accounts working Americans use to support their dreams. Are they the devil, only in the minds of tax and spend politicians and paranoid whiners on Internet discussion boards.

These bash the oil company threads have been popular for a couple of years now.
My question is this...If you really believe that oil company profits are through the roof, why do you not buy some stock in same, share in the "outlandish profits", and use your dividends to buy a Prevost?

The article on CNN did not say. I can only guess things like polymers, asphalt, waxes, chemicals, and other lubricants. They make a lot of other products besides gasoline and diesel that are based on crude oil.

I said profits would be up, and they are. If anyone has a link that shows the profit only from gasoline, please feel free to post it.

utmtman wrote: I will tell you the only real cure but no one will follow it. One has to push their senator congreesman to push getting new refineries built to handle all the crude we have sitting in the US waiting for a place to be refined. In doing that we also need to hush up all the tree huggers and enviromentalist who say we dont want those in our back yard and they are destroying the environment. And than bite the bullet for 3 to 5 years while the new refineries are being built. Only answer in existence, nothing else is ever going to get it done.
"The only answer?"
...guess what? The tree-hugger environmentalist's are here to stay; we can't "hush up" the environmentalist's, so why not figure out how to work with them? Why don't we push our elected representatives to work with their colleagues to develop clean methods of extracting all this so-called "hidden" oil.
Since you're already doing it, my suggestion to everyone else is this, find the name, phone number, and address of your local US Congressperson; contact this person and tell him/her about the "only answer in existence." If it is indeed the only answer your intelligent congressperson will put this obvious solution into action.
However, if it ain't, at least it will get the conversation started with the people who can do more than we.
