Hi All,
Our family is going to drive from the west coast of Canada to Niagara Falls, Ontario this summer and come back through the US on route 2.
We have a 7 year old son who is fishing crazy and we really want to find some opportunities for him to experience some different fishing spots along the way.
We will not have a boat with us but are wondering if anyone could recommend some campgrounds/RV parks that provide opportunity for shore fishing and/or boat rentals along our route.
Neither my husband or I have ever driven the US route before so would appreciate any input for fishing and/or general places of interest!

Check out www.exploreminnesota.com along hwy 2 you will be in the best fishing area in Minnesota. Cass Lake,Big Winnie, Leach Lake and many smaller lakes. We have a cabin on Bowstring Lake in the Chippewa National Forest and there a lot of resorts and campgrounds for fishing of docks and boat rentals. The big lakes have launch service for fishing. The Corp of Engineer parks around the Mississippi headwaters usually have a fishing pier or dock. I'll post some web sites on the thread for you to look at. What time of the summer would you be in Minnesota? Hwy 2 is a great route once you get to the western part of MN and heading west there is usually a city campground in the small towns, some are free and most are very reasonable.

Fishing is much better at Devils Lake & New Town, ND and in Minnesota than anywhere else on that route.

I used to vacation in northern MN. to fish and visit friends and family but in my opinion when it comes to quality quantity and size North Dakota has it hands down. Also look into Lake Audubon Fishing from the rocks along Hwy 83 has paid off many times when I didn't take the boat and there is a great little camp ground on the shore of the lake. Fort Stevens state park south of Garrison ND. is a very nice park as well. There are two state parks by Pick city and the fishing on the tail race is excellent either from shore or boat. Devils Lake has Many camp grounds State, private as well as the Spirit Lake Casino great shaded camp grounds with a marina. I live 70 miles from Devils Lake and 90 from Garrison and have fished these lakes for 40 years with much success. The New Town area has excellent fishing as well with a Private camp ground as well as a Casino with a camp ground. Have a great time on your vacation with the strong Canadian dollar you couldn't pick a better time to visit.

No fishing here, but plenty of fish to see for a youngster.
Cabelas store in East Grand Forks, Minnesota has large display of live sports fish in tanks and a stream inside the store.
Catfish, bass of all types, pike, sturgeon, crappies, blue gills, muskies, turtles, and walleyes are just some of the species that can be observed at close range.
It's also a very nice sporting goods store.

The best info always comes from people who live in a place.
Thanks again and if anyone has any must-see sights please let us know.
You are right about the strong Canadian dollar too but the cost of the gas has us a bit nervous!!

When You come through Wisconsin you can take a short detour up to Bayfield on Hwy 13 and take a Charter boat onto Lake Superior for Lake Trout amongst the Apostle Islands. In Ashland there is some shore fishing as well as a city owned RV park right on Lake Superior. The RV park at Ashland is nice, has water, electric and a dump station. There are also a couple of Charters that run out of Ashland. Sounds like a fun trip, Enjoy!

I have a 10 year old grandson that will fish from sun-up to sundown! End of July should be great for sunfish, bluegills and crappies for your 7 year old. Ask at any campgrounds you stay at for fishing spots for your son, he will have a blast.
